Should I buy this Porsche - Pt 2

Ok, after passing on an SC I'll try this again. 1990 944 S2, 114k, timing belt and engine seals at 102k, recent waterpump, rebuilt sunroof, only one small dash crack, new A/C compressor, new tires and brake pads, clutch done at 60k. Original Guards Red paint is red, not orange, one of the best I've seen. Black interior is super clean except for two seam splits on the passenger side seat. Overall looks to be a very nice driver.

So, me thinks that this car is worth $8500 or so. Your thoughts?

Hey Pup

there was a guy on here about a week ago advertising a 951 one owner with 75K original miles for the same price it is an air bag car but I cant remember which year, he posted a couple of pics of hte car it is owned by a woman in So FL and as a past 951 owner I can tell you they are a blast and with a few simple mods will really run strong.

my unsolicited opinion would be for the 951, besides the extra power is the added plus of it not being a red car.

Nah, I've owned a 951. Unlike the 951, a well sorted S2 can actually be reliable. It also is nearly as fast as a stock 951, with no lag.

I would go S2 or 968 if I was looking for another 944 series car. The 951 is good but unless you plan to mod it to make stupid power I would go for the reliability of the S2 or 968.

Hmmm, is there something in the Wichita water that makes a guy change cars every few months?

if it came with a good human kidney ready for transplant, it might be worth $8500.

Seriously, this car sounds like a $5K - $6K car (I do a regular search every 2 days on the entire Eastern seaboard for any Porsche under $8K) and these are readily available.

But more importantly, 944s are constant depreciators and will never appreciate. The moment you give some $8500 and drive away, it's worth $8K max.

I'm looking at an 85 Targa on Wednesday for $8500. Excellent paint and interior, many upgrades. May need a top end.

You bought a car, I have to do something to make things interesting.

How about making money with each car? That's pretty good motivation.

Shaun, you're saying that an nice S2 with 100k-ish is a $5k car? I searched autotrader and Pelican, I didn't see anything close to that. I search this entire region on CL and never see that kind of deal. Except the one I'm looking at.

With a cracked dash, that's not a nice S2. But yes, they are out there. There was one on Cape Cod for 2 weeks for $6K that was immaculate with a long list of upgrades and necessary/standard repairs. I see at last 1 every 2 weeks. Try crazedlist.org.

But really Matt, if you are looking to make money on a car, a 944 is one of the last you should be looking at. Nice, comfy cars around town that shine on the track when pushed hard, but in the entire history of 944s, I don't think anyone has ever made $ on one.

$8500 sounds like top end for that car. Buy it for 7-7.5k, if you really like it.

I love crazedlist. I think part of the disconnect is geography. A car that is rare in the midwest may be common on the coasts. Probably part of my success, I don't have many competitors selling similar cars, at least not within 1000 miles.

This making money on cars isn't science. I got a pretty good deal on my 951 and probably netted $500 when it sold. No matter the car, if you buy it cheap you can make money on it. Plus I get to enjoy driving it in the meantime.

That kid also got into a crash and seriously damaged it.

Just to give you an example, I bought an S2 about a year ago for $8300. It was somewhat-babied its whole life (137K miles) and had tasteful upgrades such as LSD, heated seats, koni's all the way around, etc. It also had the clutch and the waterpump replaced before as well as other miner things.

I would possible offer 8K.

I've made money on a couple 944s.

Shaun I like ya and all but you need to stick to the air cooleds.

Around here that car is worth every bit of 8. Cracked dashes are totally acceptable in a 944. There are very very few that have no cracks. The interior on my car for example is immaculate with the exception of the dash. Its got a good service history and appears to have been inside all its life. If the body is straight he isnt nuts.

Hey Matt there is a Miata there that you might could beat the guy down on if you went to see him. Dad just doesn't have the time. Its a blue 99.

Oh and nice 944s were starting to have a slight uptick in the market before the economy took a dump. They will appreciate in value as more get totaled or gutted for the track.
