Before you owned a Porsche, didn't you try to street race one of 'em?

I have to admit that I did. When I was 27 y/o, I bought a brand new 1987 Honda CRX Si. That thing was pretty quick off the line and handled pretty well for a front wheel drive. I was living in the San Fernando Valley at the time but worked in Santa Monica. There were P-cars galore there as yuppies were everywhere. I never tried to take on 911s but 944s were fair game. I think the CRX beat the 944 to 60 but it topped out at 115 mph. Still, that car was FUN.

Now, when someone tries to street race me in my 911, I just think back to how I was back in the day. Makes me smile a little.

I took one off the line. I had the jump, proceeded to slip my clutch - smell lasted about a week. Then needed a clutch replacement the following year. Total time on clutch, 1 year. This was in my '88 Scirocco.

I didn't have a car fast enough to race against a Porsche.
Now that I do have a Porsche, I don't challenge others either. When I have the road to myself, I'll put the pedal to the metal.
I get challenged a lot though, but only engage in some friendly fast accellerating with cars that have about the same age as mine (with guys that appreciate the car they're driving, no reckless racing). Younger cars are not just worthy.

When I was back in High School, I would race anything in town, very rarely did I get beat as long as it was a straight line.
I drove a 67 Chrysler Newport Convertible usually full of friends and beer. I should mention I had a 68 440 interceptor under the hood. 12-1 compression and twin 625 AFB's to feed it. Stomp it and the gas gauge would go left almost as fast as the speedo would go right. What did I care I was a teenager with over 500 hp at my feet. We could go and play all night for $8 in fuel. Leaded fuel. The cops would catch us and just send us home. I miss those days.

My '65 GTO would smoke every Porsche then...they never tried, neither did I...

Had a Triumph TR-8 Conv. back in the 1980's, and raced a red 911SC driven by a very pretty blonde girl on a little road from Solana Beach into Rancho Santa Fe (just north of San Diego). I was driving fast, the road was twisty and the sun was settling in for the evening, and yet she passed me with a roar. Then on one of the only straight parts of the road (I used to bicycle it all the time and so knew it pretty well), I passed her right back. She kept on my tail easily, as the car was faster than the Triumph.

I took a right hander, slightly uphill and felt the tail drift, then a quick left-hander, just slightly downhill, and lost rear grip and spun completely around - eucalyptus trees on my right, big black BMW in the oncoming lane - did a complete 180 and somehow wound up backwards in the correct lane in a cloud of white smoke (Yokohama A008R's) only to see the red 911 coming right at me! Been impressed with 911 brakes ever since, as she managed to stop before hitting me.

I waived everybody on, slunk into Rancho Santa Fe at about 15mph, feeling embarrassed and foolish and young (which I was). Stopped at the side of the road, put up the top to hide my face from the world, took a moment to wonder at my youth and stupidity, and then headed home.

In the nearly 30 years since, I have never driven so stupidly on the road again. But it is a good memory....

I humiliated Bob Grigsby once about 20 years ago. He was out on a road test in a 911SC and he thought my Karmann Ghia would be fair game. NOT! He said I pulled away from him like he wasn't even trying. He still talks about it. That was a fun car!

Never tried to race anythnig. I get challenges all the time now in the turbo. Mostly young whippersnappers. I usually just wave, and let them take off like a batt outta hell from the light.

I always had trucks, never even thought about racing. Now every Hondaghini, mitsubishi murcielago and toyota testarossa think I want to race. It gets annoying in these parts.

Next time you end up next to one of them look over, get their attention, then honk twice quickly. That's the new universal sign for "we're gonna street race". They'll drop a gear, hammer it, and go tearing away...hopefully to clear the road ahead of any cops

If they do pull away from you (since your not racing) and then they turn their blinkers on...that means they won (dude!!).

In my 87 BMW 325i convertible i used to eat a 944 daily, but never could touch the 911's. that thing had some serious speed behind it, i had it up to 140 and felt like it could still pull. and with Brembo brakes it would stop just as quick.

There were only a couple around back when I had my 11 second Camaro but the one time I did race a 911 I smoked it.

It was pretty new so I would say it was probably a 964 and it was not a turbo.

My first car was a '67 GTO 400 4 speed. Anyone in any kind of a Porsche knew better than to even try, and they were never a consideration for me. Not even on the radar. My second car was a '66 Plymouth Sport Fury 383 automatic. Same story. My third was a '67 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 automatic. No takers. My fourth was a '69 Dodge Super Bee 383 4 speed that I had built into a pretty much dedicated drag car. I got a taker on that one...

A bunch of us lowlife hotrod punks used to gather in Renton, on the old Renton Loop as we called it, at a Herfy's burger joint. We would choose off there and head out to a place in Tukwilla to race. Well, one night a middle age guy with a girlfriend about our age (early 20's) shows up in a 911 Turbo (we didn't know it was a "930" back then...) and starts bad mouthing all of us punks in our beater old muscle cars. Says his fine piece of German machinery can take any one of us hands down. So they all look to me - game on. We pooled every last cent we had between us (several hundred dollars), he matched it, and we headed for the "track".

I don't know what this guy was thinking. It wasn't even close, like ten car lengths or better not even close. He couldn't handle that, got all pissed, and claimed I jumped the start. So we did it again, only this time I let him get a couple of car lengths out before I even went. I passed him just as I went into third gear, and pulled half a dozen car lengths out on him. This time, he never even stopped, and we never saw him again. And we had beer money for weeks...

Nope.

My first car was a 1960 VW bug with a screaming 36 HP. A fully loaded 18 wheel truck could keep up with me. Then I moved up to a real speed demon, a new 1973 VW super bug. One of my buddies had a fast GTO. He got caught racing several times. He lost his license within a year.

All of this talk about street racing with musclecars. Yea, I too had a musclecar - a black 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner with a four speed stick. That thing was a monster in a straight line. I had a great time in it. In a straight line.

Every girl I knew thought it was just a big, old, ugly American car -and didn't want to be seen in it.

I sold it a year after I bought it and picked up a much, much slower, but much more well rounded car (and honestly, a much more fun car) for overall fun driving - a two year old 1980 VW Scirocco.
