Muffler experts - how can I make this quieter?
This is a Danish repro muffler for a 36hp, and it's annoyingly loud. I'm sure there's a way to modify the internals to make it quieter. I was thinking I could insert a roll of perforated metal across the middle, and then pack fiberglass on around it, and maybe pack some fiberglass on the ends, although I haven't torn one of the ends open yet to see what it looks like. Thoughts?

Jeez, its like they forgot ANYTHING inside. Would try what you suggested, and maybe get some metal mesh for the ends and sandwich it with glass in the middle.

So I made a tube of perforated steel, welded it in, and then packed it with layers of fiberglass and steel wool. I also had to relocated the outlet lower so it would clear the bumper, but that's a different story.
I think that next time I do this, I'll just knock out the mesh pieces in the ends, and push the new mesh tube through those holes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

On a VW, I thought the sound was controlled by the tailpipe. You know that little tweet, tweet sound a VW makes. That sound is because of the chrome tailpipes. If you remove those chrome tailpipes, the car will have a more throaty sound.
I'm not sure if the 36 had a tailpipe. |

What you need to do is completely stop the combustion in the engine, instead of merely muffle it.

I used steel wool in a muffler once. It lasted 50 miles. Coarse FG works a lot better.

Dunno about the sound yet - I still have to put the rest of the motor back together, but the oil cooler is still in the hot tank.

Ok, I got the muffler installed this weekend. It is now a lot quieter, even though I didn't put any insulation under the end caps. I'm not sure how long the insulation will last, but I am happy with the outcome of the experiment.
