I would be willing to put them out of their misery.
EF! I met a man in Dallas, OR who had one eye because of a spike they put in a tree, or as I recall that was the consensus. Those gals looked more like the Karo Syrup in the bulldozer fuel type than spiking tree types.

Thanks, I needed some firewood. Does a dead tree make a sound if it falls on a fruitcake in the woods?

I am proud to say that everytime I see a tall, thin tree I think of what a great mast it would make on a tall ship or how a big fat oak would make a great chest of drawers. Sugar maples make me want pancakes - I could go vampire on that sap!
The smell of saw dust and burning wood rate in my top 5 smells. I don't think I would do well with these folks...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_spiking In 1987, California mill worker George Alexander was seriously injured when the bandsaw he was operating was shattered by a tree spike. Tree spiking was declared a federal felony in the United States in 1988. (18 U.S. Code 1864). In 1990, Earth First! leader Judi Bari led activists in Northern California and Southern Oregon to renounce tree-spiking as a tactic on the eve of Redwood Summer, a 1990 campaign of nonviolent protests against logging of the redwood forest.[5] http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-tree-spiking.htm As tree spiking became more widespread in the late 1980s, especially in Northern California and Southern Oregon, some activists became concerned about the practice. Several documented injuries indicated that tree spiking had the potential to be deadly, and many environmentalists were concerned that tree spiking was giving their movement a bad name. As a result, many groups condemned the practice, arguing that there were safe and more effective ways to put a stop to logging. Within Earth First!, members were split on the issue, and continue to be to this day. http://www.nytimes.com/1990/11/04/magazine/if-a-tree-falls-in-the-forest-they-hear-it.html?pagewanted=all Many Earth Firsters make a moral distinction between their actions and terrorist ones because they target only inanimate objects. They say they draw the line at causing harm to people. Yet the potential for injury does exist, as demonstrated by a 1987 tree spiking that seriously injured a California timber worker when his saw shattered. The episode was never officially linked to Earth First, which advocates that spikers mark their trees with a spray-painted "S." But not every spiker complies. The very need to promote a warning proves the possibility of injury. There are plenty more for anyone interested enough to look.

what about never been linked to Earth First do you not understand??
BTW I twas Judi Barry who pushed for them to stop spiking trees. She wanted to forge an alliance with loggers... And, yes, some do think that they can communicate with trees. I've met a couple. |

raises an interesting question. how do the people who weep over the death of trees justify the slaughter of harmless marijuana plants? maybe there is a way to spike them.

Tree spiking is not the only tool in their arsenal - let's not overlook their outstanding work in the arenas of arson and firebombing.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003289715_uwfire05m.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/03/earth-liberation-front-be_n_89651.html http://www.activistcash.com/news_detail.cfm?hid=1670 Many of us are left to wonder what kinds of minds can be responsible for such heinous, cowardly acts against their fellow man. The video sheds a little bit of light on that. These people are in need of serious help, as is anyone who supports or defends their actions.

From what I understand of the situation(only a little), here's the gist of it:
1). The owner of the Texas Maxxim company was wrapped up the in the Keating 5 S&L bailout scandle. 2). Instead of going to going to jail and getting packed for the rest of his life, the government gave him a large bill. 3). He bought up Pacific Lumber: A large muti-generation family logging comany which had decent emloyee benefits and renewable logging practices to keep the the area resources viable. That means your grandchildren would be able to build cedar deck decades from now. 4). He gutted the company and employee pension funds, and began clear-cutting old growth areas, then salting them so the tree wouldn't grow back(probably for quick-sale deveopment). 5). This resulted in a massive loss of lumbering jobs, and devistation of the regions ecology. 6). Earth First leaders Judy Bari/Dail Cherny's car was bombed, then the FBI chargd them with it. They filed suit against the FBI. She caught a quick case of cancer(like Jack Ruby) and died soon after. |
