You ain't kidding - aviation is chock full o' acronyms...
TOMATO-FLAMES / FLAPS (required equipment per part 91) OSUN/ANDS (compass errors) IAPMAP (IFR approach prep) Hell, even "IFR/VFR" themselves... AIM (aeronautical info. manual) FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) POH (pilot's operating handbook) AFM (for airplanes) ATC (air traffic control) NAS (national airspace system) VOR (VHF Omni Range) NDB (non-directional beacon) GPS (global positioning system) TERPS (terminal approach procedures) ILS (instrument landing system) OBS (omni-bearing selector) CDI (course deviation indicator) MH (magnetic heading) CH (compass heading) RMI (radio magnetic indicator) LORAN (long range navigation) DME (distance measuring equipment) OAT (outside air temperature) TAS (true airspeed) IAS (indicated airspeed) HAA (height above airport) HAT (height above touchdown [zone]) DH (decision height) MDA (minimum descent altitude) MOCA (minimum obstacle clearance altitude) MRA (minimum reception altitude) NAVAID (navigational aid) ETOPS (extended twin-engine overwater operations) TUC (time of useful consciousness) EPR (engine pressure ratio) MP (manifold pressure) EGT (exhaust gas temperature) CHT (cylinder head temperature) VSI (vertical speed indicator) NAV/COM (navigation and communication [radio stack]) God, these are just a few that pop into my head sitting here. I'm sure if I set my mind to it I could come up with a few hundred others. Aviation is pretty clearly "government-influenced"), huh? Good ol' alphabet soup... ![]()

Of course, SS is a submarine, N makes it nuclear powered.
Military is certainly the winner for abbreviations/acronyms, sometimes combining both at once. One of my all time favorites is: FASOTRAGRUPAC. (Fleet Aviation Specialized Operational Training Group, Pacific) |

The refinery I work for used to be owned by Shell.
Shell is the king of the TLA (three letter acronym). A maintenance supervisor is called an MTL (maintenance team leader). An operations supervisor is called an STL (shift team leader). A mechanical supervisor is called a CF (craft specialist) They even have an acronym glossary on the intranet homepage so you can look up the moronic abbreviations for titles and names that have nothing to do with the real job or description. All because a bunch of idiot college graduates had to try and pretend they were super-geniuses. I friggin hate the people who think that kind of crap is intelligent. Bunch of stupidass worthless posers. |

Why is it that I can't get L O L (and other 3-letter acronyms) to "take" unless I add spaces?
