Arrow SCWPD strikes a death blow (Cash for Clunkers)

That's right, thru various nefarious means the SCWDP has put in place it's most dastardly deed. - Cash for Clunkers... starts with m/y 1984! MUHAHAHAhahaha. ...

Quote:
Here's how it works: If you own a 1984 or newer vehicle that has been insured and registered to you for the past year and gets a "combined" 18 miles to the gallon or less, you can qualify.

That's right. The power that be, are so wise, so generous, that they will pay you to destroy your (not a World Dominating 911SC) Porsche. --they know that the others will just rust away.

MUHAHAHAhahaha. ...

ha?

Wait... this is actually happening

Yep, it's a ruse to get people out there and spending what's left of their money on Government Motors/UAW vehicles.

$5001!

My in-laws considered taking advantage of it. They're considering a new Mazda 3, Honda Fit, or Nissan Versa. Take that GM!

Serious question though, 18 MPG?! How many modern cars really get worse than 18 MPG? Looking at the rules, it also appears that you can't trade your SUV in for a car, only another SUV. Am I wrong here? I would think that getting people out of their gas guzzling SUVs and into fuel efficient cars would be one of the goals?

Too bad about the 1 year requirement. I'd go buy a $500 944 and trade that in.
See, that would be the real deal....all those guys with semi-running parts cars would get their $500-$1000, we'd get a tax credit (for $4000 - $3500 reduced by the outlay for the 944) and the money would flow back into the economy.

Nope, it DOES qualify. Take a look http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm

...also note, that --just to piss you off a bit more-- the govt link calls your '84 Carrera an '84 911SC. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm

MHUHAHAHAHAhahahaha.... we have leveraged governmental incompetence to give the (false) appearance crushing 911SC's as well.

Hey wait, you're a Canuck, eh? . .. get your own Porsche car crushing program, if you want to be smart and Progressive like the USSA.

I have been to 2 dealers so far. Walking into Dodge, I have an additional $8000 in my pocket. GM is less at the moment. I went right to the fleet desk and had them pull up invoice on a couple of trucks. So that's a little back of invoice that I'd pay, but it's still too much.

There might be a GMC ext cab WT 1500 that I could possibly get for $22k less the 3500 (in my case) and the factory rebate ($4000) W/o tax/lic etc., it would be 14.5 K But, with the 9.75 tax and the 500 lic, it's still out of my range that I want to become indebted for.

Now, if I sold the Carrera....

Almost a free new truck.

Thought about taking my 98 F-150 in for the $4500 (it would only sell for about $4000) to save the effort of advertising and selling it...but I hate to see it crushed since it is well optioned and in good shape. What a waste.

It is a waste. I cold get 3500 for my truck and someone else could be using it after me. I'm just playing the numbers. Your truck might be class I like mine = 3500.

Exactly. It's like they want to rid us of those utility vehicles which work great for those times you need to haul around building supplies . ..tow a toy to the track ... or pick up and move to to a R-State.

These guys are out evilling the SCWDP with actual evil :-/

I wonder...after they destroy all the cars worth $4500 or less; will the remaining ones increase in value due to a shortage of cheap cars/trucks?

My old '88 almost always got more than 17mpg. During the winter it would dip below that sometimes depending upon how I drove.

I doubt many will take advantage of this.

How many people driving sub-$4500 cars are going to buy something brand-new?

These are either:

(A) Used-car bargain hunters, who know it'as far cheaper to keep driving the old car,

(B) People who can't afford a new car anyway.

It seems that all of the dealers around here are "certified" cash for clunker dealers.

I wouldn't mind having a new car(Mazda 6 or a Milan) but I am not going to go into debt for it.

WOnder if those that get the new vehicles will be able to afford them or will we have a similar situation as the house mortgages?

I imagine lots of folk with several cars and plenty of money might have an old beater or two.

A 944 won't qualify- It gets better gas mileage than what's allowed. The clunker needs to be combined 18mpg. A 944 will get 30 on the highway, well over 20 around town.

Another question: What's better for the environment? To manufacture a brand-new car and toss an older one on the scrap heap, or simply keep driving the car that already exists?
