I still can't believe that we are done with Memorial Day already.

The kids' school is having field day where they play games and contests My daughter has her running shoes on and is ready to go. My son doesn't join in the fun, though. He is not athletic and struggles with competition. I told him, based on his grades, he should stay in the building and study. ;)

They both want to leave early after the games so I may let them. They have perfect attendance and if it won't affect it, I don't see the big deal. The teachers have pretty much checked out anyway.

We head east on the 11th. It will be a horrible 13 hour ordeal, 887 miles of I-40 in one day.

I did that same leg in 2008 but I was by myself that time. This trip will require a full blown lunch stop, and only approved nice places with good bathrooms. When I travel by myself I I just stuff some road food in my mouth while getting gas. We plan to be at Seahawk's place Monday afternoon. We have many stops along the way on Sunday and Monday.

morning all. I to love the short weeks. not so short as to retire but short as in 3-4 days long.

The four legged alarm clock didn't wake me up till just now. Don't know what happened usually goes off at 7am every morning.

Used to drive straight thru OKC to ATL via Nashville when by brother lived in ATL, approx. 900 mi. Unabridged books on tape where wonderful. Just set the cruise on 80, keep it between the lines, and let the book melt the hours. Several books found myself hurrying gas stops to get back to the book. Just did drive thru for chow and ate while listening. Was all by myself though.

yeah that would be tuff if the passenger didn't like your pick of books.

well I made it thru step 56 last night on the lego car. Only 800 more to go.

Back in the old days!

I made the drive from Montgomery, Alabama to Oklahoma City in one drive. It was 888 miles from house to house. I did not have an air conditioned car and I always did the drive in summer. I usually left in the evening and just drove all night to not die from heat stroke. I did that round trip trip at least once in my 1973 VW bug and many times in the 914.

When I decided to leave Alabama for good and look for a new job I gave my two weeks notice, and worked for the last Friday. On Saturday I jumped in the 914 and drove up to OKC and stayed with my grandparents. I looked for a job in the Sunday paper and on Monday drove over and got a job by 9:00 AM. I hung around in OKC looking for an apartment and found a place on Tuesday. Wednesday was the 4th of July and I stuck around to celebrate with the relatives.

On Thursday I drove 888 miles home. I hooked a small trailer to the 914 and headed to OKC and moved into my new slum $90 per month furnish apartment pit of an apartment.

I used all my available cash and even some credit on the credit card to pay for the move and the utilities hookup. I lived on $4 per week for food for a while. :eek:

The single biggest reason I moved to OKC was I felt real sure I could go hang out at the grandparents house around dinner time and they would invite me to eat with them. :D

I was at work in the new job on Monday with just 4 working days of unemployment.

Unabridged really helped. The only book I didn't enjoy was one that was a gay coming out story that you didn't find out that's what it was until 6 hours into the book. Not even the reviews or back cover info said anything about it or I wouldn't have gotten the book in the first place.

My 914 was one of the few with A/C. Remember on hot August drive to ATL mid Arkansas it was 106°F. Had the A/C on it's warmest setting and the fan on it's lowest setting. It still got so cold I had to roll the window down.

The AC on 914s were all dealer add on items. As you know it used a lot of space in the front trunk.

When I asked about it when I ordered my 914 that said it was $1,000 for the AC. Every summer I wished I had it and every autocross (40 or 50 per year) I was glad I did not have the AC.

From what one of my mechanic friends told me is that the AC system is lifted right from the VW van system. With the tiny cabin it worked great. Much like the AC in my El Camino that was the same they put in a 4 door car or the station wagon.

Actually the A/C on my 914 didn't use hardly any of the front trunk. You could even still carry the spare under the cover. The only thing in the front was the condenser and a fan. It was really thin and built into the bottom of the trunk in a cut-out that was sealed with that rubbery tar stuff and painted the same as the rest of the body seams. The spare tire mount was part of the thing as it replaced the floor of the front trunk. The fan was a squirrel cage fan about 1 inch diameter and as wide as the bottom of the trunk. You had to access that stuff from both the top and bottom. I know cause I rebuilt the fan bearings so it would work better sitting in traffic with very hot pavement. It pulled the air from under the front of the car to run over the condenser (also very thin height wise).

Built mine in high school an dstill had it when we married. She had no issues with sleeping on the bed.

Refried beans to go with it? I am not usually a big fan unless it has salsa and cheese or in this case I do like it on tacos! You can guess the family's opinion on that too. :(

No refried beans just meat and my own baked cinnamon crescent roll sheets.

We're not much for eating beans around here. I even buy chili without them and grind them up when I make my own.

I don't like beans in chili either. Ruins the texture and flavor.
