The board will sit in the shop for a few days because of all the rain. I plan on getting started next week.

Nice, make sure to get pics along the way, it'll be great post whoring stuff

slodave 12-23-2010 03:29 PM

Ya know it! There will be a thread dedicated to it. :D

Well don't forget to share here as well.

I'm just nervous on one detail. The mahogany that I bought for the body is about 7" wide, which means that I have to biscuit and join to halves to make a 14" (cut to 13" final).... Traditionally, the LP body is one piece. I don't expect this to be such a close clone, that it's indistinguishable from a '59.... I can buy single planks online, but that will cost more, especially with shipping. Some of the blanks are African Mahogany, not the traditional Honduras - which is what I bought. I'm worried about aesthetics. But you would only see the joint line if you look at the back or at the tail stock, but that would be covered by a strap anyway. It should not affect tone much, if at all.

Rick V 12-23-2010 04:06 PM

You never know about the tone, they have a way of doing what they want. (Willie Nelson's is a great example). My es350 is a surprisingly strong unit, very mellow, from a model that is usually very brassy. Just enjoy the build and play what it gives you. :)

slodave 12-23-2010 04:12 PM

I know wood affects tone and that you can build two almost identical guitars and they will sound different. I'm just not sure that making a blank out of two will really alter the tone. Even more, the early LP's were all hand made and each varies from the next, including how hardware was mounted. Then, Gibson started to chamber the LP in the '80s, really screwing with tone, as they had not developed a uniform technique for chambering.

Ack, stop worrying! If nothing else, I'm sure it will sound better than the one I made 20 years ago.

Oh.... 15k!

Just ran into the neighbor girl. PharmD tuition at 'SC runs $45K. Per year.

porsche4life 12-23-2010 05:21 PM

So, you got 180k?

Noah930 12-23-2010 05:45 PM

That's more like $360K pre-tax.

pete3799 12-23-2010 05:54 PM

6 board feet is a pretty good size for the moment... I think everyone could be proud with that. It's going to get smaller, I do worry about that.

GH85Carrera 12-23-2010 07:09 PM

Stijn!!

Just remember the shrinkage! :)

slodave 12-23-2010 07:12 PM

It's kiln dried. Even exposed to freezing cold, I think my wood won't shrink. If it does, it won't be noticeable.
