Yea, Win 10 of course defaults to all MS products. And it sure loves to load on stupid games. And getting rid of X-box game bar is a real pain in the butt.
It takes a while to get it set up that way I want. Lots of people throw rocks at Norton 360 anti virus as a resource hog, but the Microsoft defender seems to use a lot of memory and resources as well. |
Wow, they waited until Win 7 was dead before upgrading? Wow. I guess it was a surprise to them that support for Win 7 was going away.
|
That is like waiting until you run out of gas to look for a gas station. Some planning ahead is necessary. At least they are not still running Window XP or Window NT.

I bought the new Motorola DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem that my cable company said to get, and paid for the upgrade in the internet speed. I hve the full upload speed but I am only getting a "slow" 440 MBps so less than 1/2 of what they are charging me for. So I called them and they decided it was necessary to send a tech to check it out. Well I am sure they saw just what the tech saw, a real noise issue somewhere. So a good tech came out and rebuilt the box outside on my wall. It is all nice and neat, and everything is lined up like a OCD person did it. It looks good, and still has the issue. So today a supervisor is coming out.
From my modem I have the Cat 5E cable that came with the modem connected to the router, and from that one of my Cat6 cables to the switch, and one of my Cat6 cables to my computer. I set up a second switch on top of the desk for now to make it easier for the techs to see what is going on. My normal switch is on a shelf in the back of the desk cabinet and I have to pull some hard drives and other computer stuff I store in there out of the way to see the switch, and stick my head up inside the cabinet to see my normal setup. It is all out of the way and just does it thing. The temp setup is just to let them see it is not my setup. |
They had to fix something up line somewhere to get me up to 100MBps when I upgraded my business connection to 100/20 to get more upload speed. Still every couple of months I have to turn the cable modem off, let it set of 10 minutes then turn it back on or it drops both up and down to around 1MBps. It costs me $140/mo to get static IPs instead of dynamic. It is normally $260. 20MBps upload is as fast as they offer residential business connections and it is a LOT more expensive. Have to have static IPs to reliably run a mail server. They let me have it for $140 because I have had it so long. Right now there is deal for $104, but after 6 months it goes up to $260.

Looks like i can get gigablast for $119/mo. That would give me 35MBps up, but I would have to setup and pay $10/mo for dyndns to handle the dynamic IP of the cox modem and access my servers from the internets. Oh, and would have to update all my dns. It would save me a whole $10/mo!
Will have to talk to the dyndns guys to see how it handles multiple servers behind a NAT. |
Arghhh!
Dang computers. Before the techs get her I was diking around with the network setting. My new computer has The latest Intel I219-V Gigabit Ethernet adapter, and it has a 5Gbps Ethernet onboard with up to 5X the bandwidth of standard gigabit Ethernet port. I can use either one and get the same speed. I then bridged them together. Same speed. The motherboard also has a WiFi adapter, and a cool looking antenna. It is the new Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200, which is compatible with 802.11ax. If I add it to the bridge, it stops the network dead. My WiFi is slug slow, so I guess I will dump my old Apple Airport and get a new 802.11ax router. I see some that come with 6 Ethernet ports, so I could go to the two computers I have directly. Then that one more cable to the switch that runs my Tivo DVR and also the 4 camera security camera that runs Power over Ethernet to them. The cameras are just 10 Mbps units. I guess I need to do research on good 802.11ax routers and find the right one for my use. The Apple router has been reliable, and has a good signal, but Apple does not support it anymore, so it is a orphan. No more Firmware updates for it. Apple does not love it anymore. |
Yep, dred when my Airport Extreme stops working. But won't look for new until it does because they keep improving wifi routers.
The JVC stereo i put in the Range Rover had wifi. It would connect to my wifi when I pulled into the garage. It also did 4.0 surround sound, and connect calls and played music from my phone. It didn't do carplay though. Hope the stereo shop finishes my Cayenne today and it sounds decent. The Bose in my other Cayennes sounded decent, and the turbos had surround. However they would even play music from my iPhone let alone connect calls for hands free. The head unit is a pioneer. Pioneer makes a 5.1 surround decoder amp. But they told me they would have to rewire all the speakers and that would make it very expensive. And I did not want to spend that much on a $6000 vehicle. Just wanted to get the sub box and amps out for the back of my SUV and still be able to do carplay for calls and texts. |
When I upgrade to whatever now router I get I will happily give you the Airport Extreme as I will have no use for it. As long as the new one has a strong signal out to my garage, clear across the house. The Airport Extreme does fine. If I have to I guess I could use the Airport as an extender for the garage.

Called Cox. To run more than one server (personal) have to do business internet to get static IPs. Also called dynamic DNS and they told me the only way to access more than one computer behind the nat is that computer would have to be a VNC ie remote access or VPN server. That would be logging in and using the computer behind the NAT to send the data. Not Good for multiple servers.
The only way to increase my upload speed on businees would be to jump it up to 30MBps from 20 for $300/mo instead of $140/mo. |
I currently have two older extremes that aren't even plugged in. Tried one as an extender, and it made the signal stronger, but file/data transfer was actually a little slower so unplugged it.

Ok, I will just trash it when the time comes.
I am leaning towards this unit: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-GT-AX11000-Tri-Band-Aiprotection-Compatible/dp/B07YD49FZT/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=802.11ax%2Brouter&qid=15798040 88&sr=8-5&th=1 It has 4 ports LAN ports. I just need three, and one of those goes to the current switch. |
Glen, which router and switch do you have? Some of the consumer switches and routers will not support those speeds even though they are listed as such. You can for a short burst, but the backbone starts dropping packets right away. Do you have the same speed issue when connected directly into the modem?
Also, something doesn't look natural in this. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kHBcVlqpvZ8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Brent, it actually got slower when I bypassed the router and went right from the Modem to the computer.
My new router gets here tomorrow. I will see if that speeds up my wifi. |
I left the house for the first time since Tuesday afternoon. It was cold an rainy all day yesterday.
I had to put on shoes and a jacket, and act like a normal adult and go to the store for more bananas & beer. I call it my B&B run. I am a banana addict. |
39 cents per pound here for nanners.
1-3 inches of crystalline structured precipitation through Friday night, but temps in teh mid to upper 30s. Go figure. |
afternoon all. I'm late and few days behind. Work and stress...………...hope one goes soon.

My Airport Xtreme is the last version they sold. It two channel, 5ghz and 2.4, has 4 Ethernet ports (one is incoming) and USB. Ethernet is 1 gigbit. Got it without the built in hard drive on purpose, they die after being Time Machine backups after about a year. Instead I use a server with an external raid connected.

Oh great, now it doesn't let me go to the last page of stijn thread.
