It was a typical "simple 20 minute" computer upgrade project. 3.5 hours later I left and it is almost done. We want to be absolutely 100% bet your life sure that the proper drive is the source, and the proper drive is the destination. I built that computer on Sept of 2015. It had the 500 MB SSD as the boot drive, and 4 other drives in it as scratch drives and work space areas to keep the boot drive as just the boot drive.

So we waited and watched as it cloned the drives and chatted.

All that is left is to put the covers back on the computer and put the old boot drive in a box as an Oh crap backup in case the new drive fails soon.

hope it goes well. Don't wait till Monday. Bad things happen on Monday.

No upgrades on Monday or Friday in the Enterprise IT world!

Porsche-poor 02-03-2023 12:52 PM

sounds like a plan. Makes for a short weekend or a long Monday.

Well, I ended up going back over there. For a simple 15 oor 20 minute clone and replace a hard drive was only 7 hours total. His boot drive is new and double sized, and all is well. That was ease. ;)

The good news is he only lives 2 miles from my house. Not an arduous journey.

I went to the National Roadster Show today. I'm not a hot rod guy, so everything was new to me. Wow. So much to see. The cars/trucks were works of art.

This one made me think of Glen:

Morning all. Well the home computer is off to the hospital. I really hate the new windows. It did the operating system update without asking and now the start button in the lower left is not working along with the search area. Then top it off the thing will not install office 365. I need to buy a boat but I bet the stupid thing would float.

I presume that El Camino is a total low rider. The paint job likely cost 2 times the cost of the rest of the car. It is cool he made the car he wanted. The great part of the car hobby is every owner can make the car into their vision of what they want. That interior is certainly not what one wants in Oklahoma on a 105 degree day sitting in the sun. But he likely never sees those conditions.

The louvers in the hood are kinda cool, must be a pain to wax, and it means the sound and heat pad under the hood is gone. That hood gets HOT on a summer day, and with no insulation it really would cook. Likely he does not drive it as a daily driver. I rolled 379,000 miles this weekend. Almost broken in now!

Nice to see a G Body El Camino at a car show.

My business partner has an Ailenware laptop sold by Dell. It is a fast machine, and the boot drive is two M.2 drives, striped together to make it one faster drive. One of them has failed and the laptop will no boot at all. He called Dell for support, and that laptop was delivered with Win 10 but it updated itself to Win 11 and they will not help him at all.

He can't even get it to recognize a USB thumb drive as a boot device. I suspect that it is locked out in BIOS so a bad guy can't boot with a thumb drive to gain access and copy data. He will have to figure out how to get the USB to boot to load a recovery version of Windows.

I think so. I kept running into it wanting some encryption key from a jump drive or scan this QR code with the device that has the key on it. Well funny you should mention that but it never asked for one to set up during the update install. When I finally did get into the at least the desktop its like a brand new computer. All the files and folder that were there are gone. I am told the computer backed it all up to one drive first. Once again a place it will not let me into.

Way to go Microsoft.

GH85Carrera 02-06-2023 06:39 AM

You should be able to go back to Win 10 for a week or so after an update. I guess you have an IT department for that.

I updated my main computer to Win 11 as I knew it was coming, and I might as well get used to it. I was talking to a guy just last week still running Win 7. That went out of support 20+ years ago. I asked if he had a Win 95 computer as well.

At my old office, before moving to aerial photography, we had one computer that did nothing but run a label making printer. It was running DOS 3.3 and we had it boot from a 5.25 inch floppy. It booted in seconds, just enter the label info, and hit print. It never failed.

Porsche-poor 02-06-2023 06:42 AM

No IT dept here. This is the home computer used for printing and that is about it. Both the wife and I have work computers. This one always seems to be a problem I hope it can be fixed or it will be smashed.

GH85Carrera 02-06-2023 07:04 AM

Just look revert to Win 10 and you should find the ways to do it. When I updated mine, it said I had a week or something to revert.

Good Luck.

Computers are FUN!

Porsche-poor 02-06-2023 07:08 AM

I think it has been over a week. It is not used that much.

On Saturday Kansas was really sucking, and Texas really blowing. A steady 40 MPH wind, just relentless wind. I guess all the wind got to where it wanted to be on Sunday, as it was dead calm. My wife when out to harvest some seeds from various plants to start her grow operation. She put down a plastic bag, and it just stayed there!

She harvested and sowed some seeds. Now, once again, the guest bathroom bathtub-shower is a grow operation. She has seeds planted in toilet paper cores cut in half, and filled with soil. They are then all placed in a plastic tub, covered with a plastic wrap cover, and a LED light shines on them 24-7 and there is a heating pad on a thermostat set to 74 degrees. The plastic cover gets wet with the humidity in the tub, and we have a mini rain forest. In a few days the seeds germinate, and start growing. Then the cover comes off, and the plants keep growing.

Just transplant the paper cores right into the ground, and they totally rot away and recycle.

Not looking forward to Win 11 at home either. Still have some Win7 computers that I need to upgrade to 10 sometime.

Porsche-poor 02-06-2023 08:38 AM

I am not looking forward to the cost of getting it fixed to work right.

You can call Windows for support. I was expecting a horrible experience, but it was a pleasant you man that had me do a few steps and presto chango things were fixed. It was a few years back, and I don't even remember the issue, but it was on one of the systems I built for my business partner.

It is all free. Just time.

Porsche-poor 02-06-2023 08:55 AM

That right there is the main thing.....Time I don't have it. I work from the office now so no can bring in the home computer. When home the computer is in the wife's office area and off limits while she works. So the plan is to let someone else deal with it.

GH85Carrera 02-06-2023 08:56 AM

Just click on the Window icon. Look for Settings.

Under System, it will have a list of several things like Display, Sound and so on. Scroll down the list to near the bottom and you should see recovery. Select that, and in the middle is "GO Back" and if it is not greyed out, select it. Mine is grey so it is way too late for me to go back, but I don't want to.
