Our Dog Does Not Like Black People

Our Rat Terrior is the sweetest dog in the world. She was a rescue dog from some old lady going into hospice. She is a great house pet - no accidents, barks only when someone is close to the house. Very loving. But here is the thing...she doesn't like black people. Our town is 97% white - we might have 6 black families in the whole berg. One black family lives in our hood. The kids are very nice - never did anything that anyother kid would or wouldn't do but our dog will bark at them and act real aggresive towards them.

I took our dog to the vet the other night to get her annual shots and the regualr vet wasn't there. Now our dog is cool at the vets and has never shown any signs of angst or distress. She was great until the vet showed up - a black vet. Imediately she cowers and backs away and tries like hell to get away.

"Hmmm, she seems rather skidish. Is she always like this?" The black vet asks.

"No, she is actually very loving and friendly" I answered.

"Must be the white coat." he replied.

"No, I don't think thats it. Sir, I do not know how to say this proper and I don't want to show you any disrespect but she doesn't seem to care much for African Americans. I don't know why - to my knowledge she has never had any problems, just doesn't seem to like them as all." I said.

"Hmmm, thats odd." He said.

OK, I call BS on that. I talked to all the dog owners I know and every single one of their dogs doesn't like black people. Like this is something new to him?

I thought it might be skin color and the fact that dogs have the whole rod thing sans the cone going on so they only see black and white and shades of gray. Maybe black people look like shadows that they can't figuer out?

Far as I can tell she is great with Mexicans and Asians.

Lots of dogs don't like uniforms of any kind. How is a dog to know what not to like by skin color? I mean there are so many dark skin types and light skinned AA's.

Seems kinda nebulous to me.

Postmen. My dog hates all postmen. He hates people dressed up as possums too.

Dogs are strange. My female Mastiff was terrified of work boots. She was completely devoted to me but would run and hide whenever I put a pair on. Owned her from a pup so I know it was not due to PO.

My Male Mastiff did not like men of any color.

My Shnauzer hated uniforms and would instantly go after anyone wearing one.

My wife had two Shelties, one male, one female, the male did not like men.

Limited color recognition. Uniforms are uniforms whether they are tan, blue, white, etc. Might be the things people wear with uniforms that gets a dog's attention.

What I was saying and wondering out loud was that if a group of AA's walked by followed by a group of Eastern Indian folks all dressed in similar Western clothing, or in the other order, would a dog not bark at one group as opposed to the other?

Dogs do see in black and white. If a dark skinned person's dog sees a light skinned person, or visa versa, it looks wrong to the dog, like a negative image. Hence a black man's dog is not likely to dig white folks, and the red neck's rover is unlikely to be too hip on black people. Much of this will be exacerbated by the reaction of the new person.

i had a german shepard that hated my friend Carl. carl was african american. even he said, alot of dogs bark at black folks. my friend was loud and obnoxious, and i think that was more of the problem.

best adam corolla joke is something about a dog's main job is to bark at minorities.

My dog loves almost everyone (kids included) with one exception, the mailman, ANY mailman/woman. I think it started when one of our mail carriers marched up onto our lawn when the dog and my daughter were out there. He went to hand the mail to my daughter. The dog freaked and thought he was attacking my daughter. A long story short; mailman on his butt in the middle of the lawn trying to crab crawl away from dog while spraying her in the face with mace or pepper spray. We are very careful to never let her out when the mailman is around. That particular mailman retired a very short time later. We were very lucky we were not sued or forced to euthenize her.

Growing up in a small city we had a crew of black guys manning the garbage truck-our beagle barked her fool head off when she saw them coming.. We moved to the burbs and a crew of white guys manned the garbage truck- same beagle barked her fool head off when she saw them coming. Beagles are pretty good watch dogs, and are light sleepers. Maybe the dog just saw guys coming and stealing the cans again and again
