Anyone here have a standing or stand-up desk?

I just about can no longer tolerate polishing my office chair with my butt. I work from home and really feel lethargic for sitting down all the time. My day's highlight is going to the gym and then walking around the grocery store, shopping for dinner stuff, because it keeps me on my feet. I don't know that I've ever even seen a standing desk, but I think I need one soon.

Maybe a drafting table would work.

I have a tall desk that I use about half the time--it's a nice change to stand and work for a while.

I hear Donald Rumsfeld had a standing desk at the Pentagon. I doubt he spent a lot of time there. But I wonder how long I could hack it. I think I'm gonna stack a box on top of my current desk tomorrow and see how I like it. Lots of good stuff on Craigslist.

I think Robert Frost used a stand-up desk.

You need one of these desks that can mechanically adjust the height.

Werd

Drafting table and a nice stool with some strategically located files and storage is a nice "work station"

I spend hours at my desk... my wife gives me a hard time when I eat lunch standing up at the kitchen island.

I use a home made stand up desk, sitting too long kinks my back and I'm darn near blind so I have to hunch over to see my work so a stand up is best for me. I also sprung for a 5-600 dollar chair a few years back and it is super nice, so comfortable that I was going to bring it into the TV room, the Warden said no so it went back out to my garage based home office. Every body is different so I found my hieght by raising my desk once I found the spot I had a carpenter buddy build me a cheap table/desk

I have both. A stand up desk behind me and a standard one in front. When someone comes into my office we can have a meeting in the standard fashion. When I feel like standing, there is a desk for that as well.

That was my set-up and will be again (the stand-up was Navy property, a really elegant old oak) soon. I really like stand-ups for editing papers and briefs and the change between desks is great for my back. The stand-up seemed to make collaborative editing with a small group much easier and informal.

It may be my poor habits, but I find typing on a stand-up clumsy.

I do a lot of typing and reading on my laptop. So I hope I can do that standing up. I think the only time I've ever been on a computer while standing is while checking them out at Best Buy.

As a side note, over the years, I've designed a number of hydraulic cabinets, sections of which are infinitely variable in height through a range of 7" for radio studios. This enables the talent, who is often also the board op, to work in either "sit-down" or "stand-up" position, as per their (or the program director's) choice.

Classical, jazz and other formats of a laid-back nature are often "sit-down" while rock and other formats, using the same air studio, of a higher energy level are "stand-up", which promotes a higher energy DJ performance, though high stools are also often used with "stand-up" cabinets.

What I ended up doing, which worked a lot better, was get a separate, dedicated keyboard for my laptop. The stand-up I had a 10in flat spot on the top of the unit. I found putting the laptop there and using the keyboard low on the slanted portion of the desk work well.

It is worth a test drive, Rick.

DARSIC, nice design...available?

One of my co-workers recently modified his desk to a stand-up setup. Then he added a treadmill tucked under the desk so he walks at 1 mph all day while working on his computer...

The treadmill would be awesome!

I just put a bamboo trunk on top of my desk, am standing as I type this and have an external keyboard attached. Keys are about at my elbow level, in other words, my forearms are parallel to the ground. This feels fine, but I need more space. I'm gonna do this when I move for sure, if not sooner.

I'm just now sitting down for the first time since my last post. I like this standing desk thing a lot.
