I bought a project 1982 Porsche 928 4-speed automatic with an unknown number of miles on it this Spring in hopes of having a cheap fun Scarface car (same one as he buys in the movie). If you don't know what a 928 is, check wikipedia.org. Fun car, 0-60 in about 7. Tops out at about 150. Mercedes-Benz rear mounted transmission. Perfect 50/50 weight distribution. A German muscle car circa the lavish 80's. So... after a few months I put new front pads and (slotted) rotors on it. 5 miles later it started running on 7 cylinders (hint: it has 8). **** my life. I don't have the time for this ****. Want one hell of a project? Registered until mid August and was smogged May-ish/2009. Straight body, no dents. No interior besides dash, front seats and drivers door panel. Everything was working ok (except sunroof). CD player and blown speakers, power windows work, power locks work. 17" Turbo twist style wheels off a 996 or 986. Originally champagne colored, now ****ty black, peanut butter and black two tone ****ty interior. Odometer does not work at all ever. Gas gauge, speedometer do not work either. Tachometer does work! Gas light does work! =) This thing is really fun to drive and if you want to work on this 27 year old Hitlers Revenge 4.5 liter 220hp V8 be my guest. It'll only run you 1500 bucks. CONSIDERING ALL OFFERS. If you want pics or more specific information email me and I will actually go out to the car (sitting outside my pad). I'm honest about all this ****, please don't waste my ****ing time. =) Cheers!

What is a nice later 928 going for nowadays? Not a 928 or 928S, but an 928S4 or GT/GTS? Last time I checked, the early ones were cheap but the later ones were still holding some value.

The GTS is an awesome car - I've seen nice ones going well north of $45k recently - and getting it.

If I can ever justify another project Porsche (not anytime soon, seeing as I have two) I'll almost certainly get a 928. Either that or a 914 for a turbo Subaru conversion heh, heh, heh...

BTW, when buying a 928, NEVER buy a 'project'/basket case. Always get a nice one. The difference in price between a basket case and a nice driver is small, but the cost to make a basket case into a nice driver is anything but small.

These are the desirable models:

80-83 Euro 5 speed (300hp, the A/T cars are only 3 speeds, so are not very fast)
84-86 Euro, any trans (310hp, the A/T cars are 4 speed)
Any US/ROW model 85+ (288hp, 316hp, or 342hp)

Don't waste your time with a 84 or older US at all, unless it's already had a lot of engine work done (like mine has). They're just not fast cars at all.

PWD thanks for posting this, gave me a good chuckle. :)

A 928 running on the track, hitting the rev limiter before an upshift, is a sound I really like.

Mine has no rev-limiter. I missed a shift once and saw the needle climb well past 7k rpm. Talk about a sphincter tightening moment. Thankfully the 4.7L Motor is bulletproof. :)

I'd be willing to bet that POS has the original plug wires in it...

I came within a day of buying an '84 euro with a manual gearbox. Chickened out because of some question marks, but that would have been a fun car. I'd still like to find a nice S4, but they're just too much money.

There's a project S4 on the 928 forum of pelican for $3k right now. It runs but needs a water pump/timing belt and a major detail.

I'd buy it myself if it was local to me.

There's also an early 80s Euro 5 speed 300rwhp/2600lb full race version on ebay too- for dirt cheap. $3k i think it was.

Body is rough, but who cares.

Considering the complexity of the 928, "project" is a rather scary word.:p
