My '88 Volvo daily driver is named "Tina" but not by me....
The previous owner left instructions that her name was Not to be changed for any reason. At first I thought this quite silly, but the more I drive "Tina" around the more I am convinced she does, indeed, have a personality! Sounds silly, I know, but I made the mistake when relating this story to someone a couple of weeks ago saying that in My mind she was a "Miss Tina" or rather a "Miss Christine" - you know, like an elderly, gray haired spinster school teacher. Well, the very next day the oil pressure light started coming on when the engine Was Not running!!! It continued this for a few days until I talked with the mechanic that has serviced her for years. He was the one that told me not to re-name her. I admitted ot him that I thought she may have a "personality" and he agreed. The next morning when I got in her to drive I patted the dash and said, "Tina, I'm sorry I called you a gray-haired spinster. You're not a Miss Christine, You're still a sexy Tina!" Sound silly? Well, the oil pressure light was still on when I gave her the apology. It went off when I started the engine but came on again when I parked her. The next day, yes, the next day, when I went to get into her to drive the light was OFF! Strange but true! She'll remain "Tina" to me forever. And so far I'm afraid to name the 911. |
i called my 911 rat bastard whore of a car
but said it in her presence after it was loaded on the truck to be hauled away to it's new owner. |
Kleine is my '66. Kleine means "Shorty" in German. :)

When I was trying to get her to start I would be all "come on, baby, come on girl!" When she wouldn't, I would start to call her a stupid beeyotch and other such things. :p Naming your car kinda implies that you have a relationship with it. I'm already in a stable relationship with my wife, my kids and a cat (whom, as it happens, all have names!) So my car I will refer to as "the Porsche"... affectionately. |

Just realized I've only named cars that I didn't take for granted.
I inherited Sylvia from my older sister when she went to Europe. My dad was always threatening to sell her, and he finally did. :( Buffy was just plain ugly :p - an old ford fairlane - but she got us to work, school, college..... This '83 BMW is supposed to be a filler on the way to my "real" car, but it's really growing on me. Of course the new paint helps. And during this recession, no car payment is incredibly attractive. |
long ago i had one that i called "the hell bit**".
another called "widowmaker". both were retired police cruisers. made great winter rats. |
i used to try the old trick of naming motorcycles after girlfriends. this was supposed to distract them from spending more money on the bike than her.
only worked up to a point. |
I call my 911 "Tristezza" (sadness) because she's blue.
I've had three minis, all called "Jimmy". My daughter named her Boxster "Gioia" (Joy) to contrast with my car. My friend BB calls her Boxster "Carolina", after what Donald Duck's car was named in Italy. Porsches are living things, how can you not name them? |
I didn't name any of mine, they were all named by someone else, my daughter named Lanna, the wife named Willie and Eartha, but the best one is Peggy. I bought her a few years from an elderly gentleman who gave her the name. I handed him the cash, he handed me the title, and said, " Son, her name is Peggy, I expect you to refer to her as such" I just said "Yes Sir". I call her Peg.

name that car
I name all my cars, and the current P-car is named Abigail. Just fits her for some reason.
We also named my dad's work car this summer, a brownish 1989 Buick Lesabre that "only has 35,000 miles on it". We call it "Doo Doo Brown". |
"Patience"

the early s is Elly May, as in Clampetts.... Named during a race weekend in Denver some years back..

My old 944 Turbo was called Ish.
It was reddish, fastish, porsche-ish, etc. Made sense. My current 911 is called the Porsche, although my wife calls it; "the hot, red, smelly, *****box that is impossible to shift". We are on our second Rumba vacuum that we have named Monica, I thought that was funny when I saw someone else that named it that. We did it because Monica on the TV show friends is always cleaning. Made sense for a robot vacuum that is designed to clean. |
I kind of became addicted to one particular type of car. Strangely, that addiction remains to this day.
Because there were always 'several' of the things lying around the yard, i found it easier to name them by color. It stuck! We still do that! Except the Porsche. |
I even thank my cars for the ride when I get to where I am going, and say good morning as we start our day.
