AR-15 guys, what optics you using?

What optics you guys have on your AR'S I had a cheapo red dot on my M4, that finally crapped out. Lookin to pick up another one Not sure If i want to spend the big bucks on a good holographic such as an Eotech. Or just get another decent mid range red dot.

on2wheels52 08-24-2009 04:27 PM

Standard peep, will use something else on distant zombies.

I have one of the old Colt 4X scopes that fit the handle top mount. It's crap IMO
not a lot of light required just a 4X is not good for the .223 cartridge.

I would like a Leupold 3X9 variable

The factory iron sights on any M-16A2/CAR/AR-15A2 or better are utterly superb units and to me, they are totally sufficient for anything out to 500 meters.

So in that vien i simply got trijicon replacement sights.

VINMAN 08-24-2009 04:35 PM

My buddy has the Trijicons on his. I like them!

m21sniper 08-24-2009 04:39 PM

Then i guess we have a winner! :)

legion 08-24-2009 04:47 PM

I'm running a cheap Barska scope on my Bushmaster (full-length). I have the scope sighted in at 100 yards, and the iron sights at 25.

When my Rock River Arms carbine gets here (been on order since April), it will get an Eotech.

Go 2-7...more compact and plenty of power for .223

I picked up one of these at the NRA Annual Meeting, heavily discounted. I had planned to use it for my next build. But I love carrying it around when I go for walks, that I might not mount it. 700 lumens is nuts.

On my Bushmaster I'm running a Millett Zoom Dot. Had some issues with the battery. So I found their cust. service guy at the NRA show here and he totally hooked me up, took the thing apart, showed me everything, gave me a new battery. Very cool cust. service.

rattlsnak 08-24-2009 05:20 PM

does anyone make a scope that fits on top of the handle? or do all of them require taking the handle off to attach?

legion 08-24-2009 05:22 PM

The Barska I got fits on top of the handle.

Yes.

Look at a Colt H-BAR Delta.

They have a rubber armored Tasco 3-9 scope that fits on an ARM's mount on top of the carry handle.

alf 08-25-2009 02:20 AM

Iron sights work just fine. Anyone have experience with the Tritium front post sights?

MotoSook 08-25-2009 02:45 AM

The guy said he wasn't sure he wanted to spend big bucks on an ACOG (thems is really big bucks!) or EOTECH. The irons are cheap :)

But if you must have a RD, check out Primary Arms' M3 multiple reticle 2 MOA red dot. You can get a package deal for less than $200 which includes sight, 3x magnifier and mounts. The quality is very good for the money. I even read one guy prefered the PA red dot over his Aimpoint. If you buy an Aimpoint later, the PA mounts and magnifier will work with it.

x2

MotoSook 08-25-2009 03:03 AM

Here's one of the Primary Arms red dot on his cantilever mount. The internals are epoxied on and the dials have positive detents. The reticle has 7 levels of brightness which you probably only us 1 thru 4 unless you are shooting in the middle of White Sands NP with the noon sun.

Elcan 1-4X, may have been selected by US Special Forces. I like the Eotech but this has the option for magnification. Magnification controlled by lever on left side.

MotoSook 08-25-2009 03:27 AM

The SpecterDR retails for approx. $2000. Ouch! That's two new AR rifles worth.

VINMAN 08-25-2009 06:26 AM

The iron sights are just fine. Heck, I consistently shot Expert with them in the Army. But I like the latest toys. I want the best for when the zombies come and the impending civil uprising happens!:D

m21sniper 08-25-2009 06:59 AM

When the zombies come, and everyone else's fancy red dot batteries are dead, or their optics smashed, my good ole' Trijicon peep sights will still be 100% functional. ;)

VINMAN 08-25-2009 07:02 AM

Stop using logic!!!:D

m21sniper 08-25-2009 07:05 AM

I apologize. :D

jbryant 08-25-2009 07:09 AM

I have the Cmore and love it. You can still look through and use the iron sites, etc
It would be nice if it had an "auto off" feature though, as I tend to leave it on and kill the battery on occasion...

The achilles heel of 95% of all the red dot sights out there, and 99+% of all the reasonably priced ones.

MotoSook 08-25-2009 07:27 AM

If you can't co-witness with you irons don't buy the optic.

Aimpoints have something like 10000 hrs of battery life and you should carry a spare. So ACOG doesn't have much advantage over the Aimpoint unless you expect the Zombie invasion to last more than few years. By then you may run out of ammo :)

But toys are toys...so buy what you want and enjoy.

m21sniper 08-25-2009 07:35 AM

What advantage exactly is it that people think they gain by going with an unmagnified large MOA red dot vs the EXCELLENT m-16a2 peep sights w/tritium inserts?

Not accuracy. Not acquisition speed (OK, red dots are a wee little smidge faster). Not reliability, or light weight.

What?

Ah, right- they look cool. :D

Had to bring this to the board's attention. Smoking, smoking deals on rifle kits. I just ordered mine. Looks like I'll have a very badass M4 for just around $700 when all said and done.

legion 08-26-2009 12:03 PM

I've been wating from my chrome-lined M4 to come in from RRA since April...

matt711 08-26-2009 12:58 PM

I have used an Eotech 552 for my last 2 deplolyments. I bought it myself back in 02, some units issue them now. The ACOG is a great optic as well. The Eotech is better suited to CQB although the ACOG works in this role as well. Eotech is a lot less money. Mine is mounted on a LaRue QD and cowitnesses with my Troy Industries flip-up front sight. It's all personnal preference though.

Matt

MotoSook 08-26-2009 01:09 PM

Rick, I hear Del-ton can suck on delivery. Better check. There's plenty of deals out there right now. Complete rifles can be had for $750.

Chris, I think RRA is starting to catch up to January orders.

You can actually get forged upper and lower receivers for $175-190 now, both. Spikes Tactical has a smoking deal for a lower @ $89 right now and their forged part starts out the same as some other flashy brand.

They have a nice complete rifle for $950 with cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel, pmag, upgraded buffer and their custom tact case. I think the barrel is a Daniel Defense barrel which sells for $350 alone.

JTO 08-26-2009 01:47 PM

for my AR-15 (DPMS heavy barreled flat top) I mounted a Leupold VX-2 3-9 with a GG&G mount. With another GG&G product, I mounted a Burris Speed Dot on top of the optics. This gun is used for 3-gun so I needed the optics for the 250 yd shots and the red dot for the close stuff. Works great.

On my DPMS LR-308 AP4, I mounted an Eotech 512, a lot like Matt. Really great for up close work. Not good for long range shots. Its a compromise.

Rick Lee 08-26-2009 03:06 PM

Damnit Soukus! why did you tell me about Spike's? Now I have to have one of those painted lowers. This is becoming an expensive day. I may have to sell my P229 to cover today. I'm in no hurry on the delivery.

MotoSook 08-26-2009 03:13 PM

LOL. Just doing my part to keep Americans armed :) .... Well armed!

m21sniper 08-26-2009 03:21 PM

This is one seriously prepared forum.

legion 08-26-2009 04:10 PM

Anyone know of any smoking deals in .50 BMG rifles? Say, for under $1000? :p

on2wheels52 08-26-2009 04:22 PM

"any smoking deals in .50 BMG rifles? Say, for under $1000?"

I think that's going to be a pretty short list, unless Hi-Point comes out with one.
Jim

legion 08-26-2009 05:24 PM

Yeah, I know.

Leland Pate 08-26-2009 06:59 PM

That Elcan is sweet!

I have an Elcan Specter IR on my M1A.

For my favorite AR, I went with the ACOG TA01 w/Dr. Optic:
