Bad Day at the Waterford Track - DE

Yesterday I decided to watch a Drivers Education day at the Waterford, MI track. I took my car out for the first time this year, been trying to save money but need to burn through the old gas.

Never too old, not so sure, you will see why.

Before:

After:

The car came around the final turn to the finish/start line and lost it. I've seen many Ferrari's spin out towards the infield at the same spot. I was on the roof of the building looking at the car through my binoculars when I noticed the left front wheel was not in the same direction as the rest of the car, then a puff of white as it lost adhesion. The rear swung out, I think he over corrected and tried to power out of it. He should have just locked up the wheels and let it spin. The car tacked a straight line about 15 degrees off and 125 feet to the wall. The left front impacted the wall right under the tower (two guys in the tower must have been freaking), the rear swung around and also impacted the wall. The car came apart, wheels and tires everywhere, a cloud of smoke and a flash of fire from the engine bay as it slid for almost 200 feet.

The driver suffered a broken ankle, we all felt really bad for him and perhaps worse for his car.

See ya all September 22nd.

The building is behind my car, the roof deck has a great view of the action.

My car was all clean, 303 Aerospace Protectant on all the black parts. I never want to see it crunched up like that.

Bummer. Is that a C4S?

Part of the excitement of going to the track is knowing that something like this could happen, right?

No I don't think so. I thought so at first, similar looking car was there.

I wouldn't run a car I cared a lot about at Waterford. You go off and there's likely to be a tree, a wall, or a fence with your name on it.

Ouch! That would ruin one's day. Yeah Curt, that wall looks a bit close for my comfort. I think I will stick to more open venues.

Yes, I judge a track by how good the run off is

that's why they say if you take a car to the track, be prepared to leave it at the track...

having said that,, that sucks....

That is what they make 944s for

Yeah, I'll bet his insurance company will elect to not participate in the repair process. It sucks big time but 9dreizig called it exactly right.

Holy crap!!!

george-whose car is that? I don't recognise anyone in the pics from the club. I remember the car, though. I saw him on I96 last year heading towards Lansing. I recall the plate.

My son and I took the 911 down to Walled Lake yesterday. I was going to stop by the track on our way home but time ran out on us.

I did not get a name, saw some familiar faces but you know there is not a lot of mixing of the track and cruiser people (Glen Trapp and Jim Christopher were there).

I did not see the trailer for track tires anywhere which I assume the hitch was for. My guess is he did not tow this time.

Example:
track tire trailers - pics? hints?, 911 hitch comments
