Slingbox. What can you tell me?

My son is heading off to college and I thought it might be nice if he could watch local sports on his lap top.

Anybody use slingbox?

pretty nice little unit - bought one of the first ones and they work reasonably well. you will need to have a descent broadband connection though. Will buy one of the newer ones that allow you to switch sources as well.

I have an alternative unit called a HAVA and it works great. Plus, it was $59 on Woot for the HD version. Remember, you are just forwarding the signal from the cable box. You can't watch 2 different things, unless you get another cable box. If he watching X, the TV with the Slingbox will be viewing X, if it is turned on.

Slingbox is very cool. But make sure you put it on a 2nd TV so there isn't conflict between school and home. And it is surprisingly handy even around the house.

I also got the mobile client and can -but haven't- watch it from my Smartphone.

Go for it.

I have the mobile client for my Windows Mobile phone for Hava, and it works very well, on wifi. I can't get 3G here, so I can't tell you about that. Does not work on GSM

Have used it for years and love it. Its kinda like Tivo in that once you get used to it, its hard to not have.

Am overseas right now and use it to keep up on whats going on around home and to watch something interesting when the hotel TV falls on its knees.

I've had mine for 4 years - I was in Tokyo - went to my friends hotel room down the hall as we were leaving for dinner - I saw he was watching the local morning news back home and knew I had to get one for myself.

Mine is hooked up to the TV and TIVO in my home office - when you set up the unit, you choose which remote you use for your TV - mine is the TIVO remote.
