The mouse thing is funny, Apple managed to make a two-button + scroller/gesture mouse that looks like a no-button mouse! It's all about fashion at this point. My Logitech 3-button works fine and is far more ergonomic than anything they ever put out.

I long for the days of vi. Honestly, I do. Sadly, it doesn't do "WYSIWYG" document editing very well unless you're into TeX...

I've figured out how to stop the annoying "fade in" windows. Now they pop in like XP. This thing is much faster. I'm not sure how much is x64 operating system and how much is bigger/badder processors.

x64 is a pain in the @ss for getting the right drivers. I needed a driver for my Dell Printer. The CD that came with the printer didn't work. The Dell website under Windows 7 x64, didn't have a driver. I ended up looking under Vista x64, and found the Win 7 x64 updated driver!

I've reloaded all of the essential software. Only Symantec is having a slight issue and I just need to get to Symantec and download the right driver.

Yep, things are in a little bit different places, but I'm finding my way. Kinda like moving into a new house. With an operating system, I don't see the need to move things around, for the sake of moving things around.

We've got 3 Win 7 Home Premium machines on our home network, running McAfee, Norton and Trend Micro A/V programs respectively.

After going through and manually disabling the A/V on each machine, creating a homegroup on one, sharing the password and joining the other two to the network, the homegroup occasionally works. For awhile. And then one or another machine will either not recognize the homegroup at all, or will recognize it but not open shared folders/files, etc., with no apparent reason. Very frustrating and time consuming.

I've decided that I will have to wait for the inevitable SP1 for W7 for an effective Homegroup fix...

I haven't really used the Homegroup much, but since your post I have been rebooting my notebook and checking Homegroups performance.

No issues. Works fine and one of the libraries I am checking is 450gigs! (mp3's)

I've been using it for a few days now and other than the user interace itself being a bit of a drag my programs (the few of them) are running well.

I've even got some Cisco Router virtualization going well enough to be useful - under XP I couldn't get enough memory available to do a bunch of routers.

More on my story, and why I hate "help desks". The first guy I talked to at Dell, in the printer group, told me that if I installed the printer onto a network, then installed XP drivers on XP machines in the network, that I would never be able to load x64 drivers onto a Win 7 machine and make it work. HUH? No software is loaded onto the printer from the XP mahines, why should there be any connection? I told him he didn't know what he was talking about and to get me to a supervisior. When I asked him his employee ID, he hung up!

Tech number 2 ended up consulting with his supervisor and told me that the printer and Win7 were not compatible. He sent me to customer service, so I could return the printer. If I was going to return something as "not compatible", it was going to be the laptop

Customer service was not very helpful, but at least she transferred me to a better tech.

Tech #3 said he couldn't help, but he would tranfer me to the "software" group.

While I was being transferred around, I decided to look at the windows Vista x64 drivers. Interesting, there was an updated drive on Oct 29th. I downloaded that one and started to read the "readme.txt" notes.

Tech #4 comes on the line, I explain everything and he points me to a "later" driver. I had already downloaded that one, and it is a driver for the scanner function. I tell him this and he reads the notes and agrees. I tell him I think I've found the correct driver and ask him to verify it. He reads the notes and says that it the correct one.

End of the story, the printer and fax-printer drivers work and I can print from my laptop. It is turning into a nice machine.

Techs 1 & 2 and their Supervisor are Pwned by me.

Other Win 7 oberservations: Adobe Acrobat 9 doesn't work with Explorer 64. It does work with Explorer regular (32). You need to look for the x64 version of whatever software you're running, since the 32 bit version doesn't always work (Symantec Endpoint, but they have a x64 version!).
