Allergic reaction--only Hunt's ketchup!

My son only has a reaction to Hunt's ketchup. He breaks out in hives within 12 hours of consuming the item.
Other brands are no problem at all. He eats ALOT of it, no matter the brand.

We took him to the doc as we thought it may be chicken pox but it wasn't.

I bought a couple of bottles at Menard's yesterday(on sale) and we used it for dinner.

This morning he woke up with spots on his tummy.

I cannot find any real difference in ketchup brands but there must be something in the Hunt's that causes the reaction.

Anyone else allergic to one brand of food or product?

Clue number one. Don't buy ketchup at a home improvement store.

You know, I thought maybe it was old but it wasn't.

He told me"Dad, we are NEVER buying ketchup at Menard's again!".

"I know, buddy, I know."

Is this the Ketchup made by Mrs. John Kerry?

Could your son be the new poster child for the rebirth of the Republican party?

OMG, that means he will be forced over to the other side by medical issues....

I had totally blotted out the 'Heinz' word from my brain.

OK, seriously now.......
I actually do have 'reactions' to certain brands of foods as well.

Cannot do 'sliders'... I don't think it's the Chicago connection, I think it's the onions.

Cannot do certain teas, think it's the 'tannins'. You can just about figure the 'healthier' the brand name, the more likely I'll get sick from it.

I was thinking about doing that. I'm not looking for anything from them, though.

Wayne, food reactions with children are both very common and regularly very frustrating. Both for the family and the doctor. Often impossible to pinpoint the causing factor/factors. Further, many times its not a question of an allergy per definition, but rather unspecific intolerance from different parts of the immune system. Hence, lab and skin tests are frequently useless. Many times the simple message is just to avoid food that regularly elicits reactions. Ketchup is by the way one of the most common culprits, some brands more than others.

Important to understand that this kind of skin reactions from unspecific intolerance is very rarely dangerous. Mostly annoying. Most children tend to grow out of them eventually.

Really? Wow, that's very interesting. Who'd a thunk it? That would suck. Growing up, I had ketchup on hamburgers, hotdogs, french fries. To me, those things are as American as apple pie and require ketchup.

Years ago, a server at a hotel restaurant in England referred to ketchup as . . . American Sauce . . .

Now that's funny.

These days, I'm actually more of a mustard guy than anything, but I still like ketchup/catsup on French fries, hotdogs and hamburgers.

Tetley tea used to do the same thing to me.

Tetley tea, and only Tetlea tea cause my face to swell and a rash to start. Took me quite a while to figure out what the hell was causing it.

It could be the type of high fructose corn syrup they use, or high levels of pesticides.
Monsanto/ADM has devised all types of warped plant genetics.

- you might get information from them - gota be some ingredient that is likely in other foods causing this

- it also alerts them to a potential problem

Thank everyone. My wife read the responses while I was at work.

We've got it down to Hunt's. Even "store" brands are ok for him to eat.

I may just send an email to Hunt's and see what they say.

People forget that tomatoes ARE poisonous...they can irritate skin, cause hives, and they are part of the nightshade family. It's only recently (200 years) that people here have eaten them.
