California's unemployment rate hits 12.2% in August
Los Angeles Times - 5 hours ago The rate rose from 11.9% in July, setting a record, but the pace of job losses slowed. Service Employees International Union member janitors rally in North Hollywood to protest the decision to close the only unionized Toyota plant in the US and the ... I'm sure they kept all the NON Union plants open. I'm sure glad I don't live in Kalifornia. Now if they would only award the 2016 Olympic to Shecago that would be great. Shecago will be the place to be for JOBS. |

I hope to God Chicago does not get the Olympics. Daley is salivating and the prospect because he can get taxes raised on the rest of the state and sent to Chicago to fund the games, but the taxes won't go away once the games are over. He will saddle the state with massive debt just to stroke his ego.
With the non-union plants, Toyota can renegotiate at any time. Toyota can keep the best workers and fire the dead weight. They can redefine job responsibilities. They can redesign how the plant works. With a union plant, Toyota has two options: lay off based on seniority (not job performance) or close the plant. They cannot change anything without renegotiating with the union. Considering that this plant has no cars to build, and will always be a source of headaches because of the systemic inflexibility, I don't blame them for their decision.
