Stomach, MY point is we used to manage situations like these. Now, everyone defers to HR. There is a reason someone should be a VP, director, whatever.
It's because they can manage. Most places are 'at will' anymore, anyway. I don't care, let the pimply-faced kid with an MBA in HR deal with it. I just think it's wrong. But I'm old....

there are always... too many sides of a story. Let say if they were friends for 10 years in school, another 5 years working at the same place, go out for a drink eery friday night, or even go catch girls every weekends. Is a joke like this still seem to be stupid? And it was friday night, not business hour when he sent the text. Plus they know each other's cell#, they must be sending text back and forth often.
This is only a scenario but if it's true, I don't think the sender is an idiot but the receiver is weird. My message now is, no one know enough detail to fire him, or even send him to HR. As many said HR = no human.

Why keep idiots around when there are more than enough good people begging for a job.

People are morons. It's inescapable, unfortunately.
I 100% agree with Joe though. Nothing makes me more furious these days than to see incompetence/apathy/laziness/attitude on the part of people working - whether it's someone I run across in a professional setting, at the store, at a restaurant, wherever. No matter what line of work someone is in, I guarantee there are 50 people that would LOVE to have their job, no matter how much the current occupier might complain/b1tch/whine/gripe about it. I actually overheard someone complaining about their job to a co-worker (I was in a sub shop ordering) the other day and felt compelled to actually interrupt them and say, "excuse me, but if you hate the job that much, why not leave - there are probably a hundred people that would LOVE to have this job right now, including me". She gave me an indignant "what business is it of yours" look and walked off, leaving her co-worker to finish my order. People are just plain idiots sometimes.

Only one case that I know of. Our former HR supervisor had left the company and found out that several of us had been laid off 3 weeks after 9/11. Company was trying to kick us out and not give us our 401k that had been vested. She contacted me and gave me a list of the things to ask for and what to do. I did so and saved our 401k for about 25 people. Really helped us and she did not even work there then. This is the ONLY case I have seen where someone in HR was there to help. Otherwise they are there to CYA for the company and screw the employee. Most people I know treat HR as snakes there waiting to bite you when you make even a simple mistake.

Good on her. More than likely you're seeing someone who remembers that there's people associated with those manilla personnel files.

She just returned from a year's tour in Afganistan with the US Army Reserve. At age 50 she is still in the reserves and serving her country. Am proud to be her friend.
