Moose season 2009

Moose season lasted three hours and ten minutes yesterday for me. After being cleaned the meat weighed 620 pounds. My hunting Buddy and I did a lot of preseason scouting. It took about four hours to get him out of the woods.

finding a moose to shoot is difficult. amazing how some animal so huge can vaporize into it's surroundings.

A common sentiment from folks who haven't actually done it.

Making the actual legal moose season last three hours and ten minutes means their pre-season was probably most of the preceding year. I've killed some nice deer at the crack of dawn on opening morning, and some of my hunting buddies always say "that was too easy" or tell me "you're just lucky". The ones that scout with me know different. To paraphrase Jack Nicholas, "the more I scout the 'luckier' I get..."

When I was really into it, I would scout when the season closed until the snow kept me out, and resumed scouting again as soon as the receding snow let me back in. I usually knew where a couple of good bucks were likely to be. To the unaware, I'm sure it appeared I just walked in and shot them - no big deal. If they only knew.

Congratulations, Steve. I love moose meat.

Thanks for the nice comments. We go the moose out with a four wheeler with a trailer and using an electric winch on the four wheeler. It was rough terrain and the winch was used constantly, it's amazing it didn't burn out. Getting the moose into the back of the truck was not that hard. I put the truck in the ditch and the tail gate was then level with the road and we pulled it in. That F150 isn't pretty but it sure does a lot of work.
In New Brunswick there is a lottery for a moose license. The winner may then name a second hunter on the same license. The two can each carry a gun but must be in visual or hearing distance with each other with out the aid of radios. My hunting Buddy and I did lots of preseason scouting. We picked this spot, and set up about 200 yards apart, the moose came out in front of my buddy so he shot it. We will split the moose and will each have about 300 ponds of meat. Now I need to go buy a bigger freezer.
Steve

believe it or not there is a down side to scouting and popping a critter opening morning.......................

you then become scorned by yer fellow hunters and become relegated to being the ................

CAMP SLUT/BEE-OTTCH!

funny how that works and becomes more pronounced as the your partners start going on day 5 of a 10 day hunt without seeing anything!

meanwhile yer laughing yer ass off everytime they mention anything about how lousy a hunt this is.

I have actually done it, as a kid with my father in the early 60's. He did a stint as a nuke instructor at the Navy's reactor school outside Idaho Falls. He was an Army Ranger, paratrooper, graduated from West Point and also had two masters degree from MIT. Interesting dude. He fought in Korea and would subsequently go off to fight in Vietnam.

We planned and stalked just as you wrote. I get all that, did it with moose, elk, pheasant, grouse: listening and learning, understanding habits and territory boundaries of your game was what I began to excel in. I have vivid memories of driving all over Idaho, MT in his '58 El Camino, all seasons, hunting.

The end game really bothered me with moose. I never got it, never will. It is shooting a horse that can't really run, well.

Because someone doesn't agree with your sentiments doesn't mean they don't understand the hunt, Jeff.

Steve, my apologies for interrupting your thread. I shouldn't have.

Do me a favor (and you seem the type that already does) use every ounce of that animal you can.

I guess you kind of lost me somewhere the, Paul. I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at.

"The end game" - do you mean the shot itself? In big game hunting, if everything has been done properly, you should be shooting at a stationary animal that is completely unaware of your presence. Running ability (or lack thereof) should have nothing to do with it. If it is running, you screwed up somewhere, and you should not be shooting. That's when it's time to pull back and try again.

Anyway, I just thought your comment about the "bus at a stoplight" was a bit out of line. It trivializes Steve's accomplishment, and he does not deserve that. I understand all of the hard work that goes into taking an animal like this, both before and after the trigger is pulled. Yeah, the actual shot should be a "bus at a stoplight", but there is so much more to it than that. Steve is obviously (and justifiably) proud of his success. He doesn't need someone saying, essentially, that this was really no accomplishment at all.

That is why I apologized to Steve and I will again. And I will keep my own council on my refrain to you, Jeff, in deference to Steve.

Nice job getting the moose into the truck! About 6 years ago, my cousin, uncle and a few other family members helped uncle get a moose out of a swampy area near camp in Hornepayne, ONT. We ended up using a chain saw(until the chain finally gave out) and packed it out in 100 lb(that's 50 kilos to you) chunks in a boat. In ice cold water of course. We still tell that story around the fire. It was kind of like a scene from the Sopranos of Hornepayne.

No need for anyone to apologize, shooting a moose is not for everyone. I certainly respect anyone's opinion. Even I have some mixed emotions about shooting such a big animal, BUT, I know all the meat will be eaten and appreciated. Moose are responsible for fatal motor vehicle accidents in this area, especially at this time of the year during mating season and the population must be controlled. Personally I don't see any difference between killing this moose or buying beef at the super market, but that is the way I see it and I don't expect everyone to see it that way.
I did get to spend some good times with friends and the outdoors. These are memories that last a lifetime.
Steve
