FS: HJC Motorcycle Helmet Adult S
Selling my old Motocross style helmet. HJC CLX-4 Fuel in adult small. Blue Metallic,Black, white, silver, and charcoal. In good shape but with some small wear. Rubbing from a goggle strap and a few dings. Never been wrecked. Inside looks like new and it has the removable cheek pads. I bought this helmet about 5 years ago and it just doesnt fit me. Would be great for a kid learning to ride a motorcycle or 4wheeler. It was a top of the line at the time I think I paid about $150. I will take 80obo. I would entertain trades for a nice open face auto helmet in Adult M. Free delivery to any WBR region PCA event.

Sidney, I have it that the shell of a helmet breaks down over time. This from the Shoei site, it does read a bit strange, perhaps not a great translation:
"How many years can the helmet be used? We recommend exchanging in three years. The purpose of the helmet is to be superannuated, and not to be able to maintain new time and the same performance by a change with the lapse of time like deterioration etc. The performance deterioration of the helmet progresses chiefly by the following two factors. AAA) Wear-out of interiors by use. BBB) Deterioration of plastics component by sunray, especially by ultraviolet rays. Therefore, after it manufactures it, the product that well, is hardly causes a change with the lapse of time in the warehouse as for keeping. The influence by ultraviolet rays occurs FRP and, as a matter of fact, the performance decrease doesn't occur few for about three years. However, an interior made of the form of the urethane and an energy-absorbing liner made of the styrene foam might cause wear-out and deterioration because of use. The mind distribution recommends the use within three years too much in a usage commonsense this though it is not needed. The helmet used for three years or more might not demonstrate an enough protection performance during the accident. Please note it enough. Neither the helmet that receives a big impact nor the helmet that is damaged and remodeled might demonstrate an enough protection performance during the accident even if it is within in three years. Please note it enough." I get asked at the pawn shop if I buy/sell used helmets. I tell them heads are too valuable for a used helmet. Jim

The value of a used motorcycle helmet is exactly $0.00. And isn't it funny how every single used motorcycle, dirt bike, auto-x or bicycle helmet is magically "never dropped, never crashed, only a few miles on it, etc."
There's a great sign hanging up in my LMC (Local Motorcycle Shop): "If you have a $2.00 brain, then buy this $2.00 used helmet" Would you buy a used car seat for your kids? I wouldn't. Precisely because despite what the seller says and no matter how trustworthy they are - you never know the history. Read this article (very good information): http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/gearbox/motorcycle_helmet_review/index.html One of the very best helmets out there is the Z1R-ZRP-1, which can be had for well under $100 brand new in the box. Unfortunately it's made in China, but when it comes to protecting your skull and its contents, I don't really care where it's made - I care about getting the best protection.

All true, I'm sure.
Does that mean that Sid's helmet is crap?? Dunno bout that. If a helmet would pass a thorough visual inspection by myself, I would not hesitate to use it. Horror stories about people running out of luck because of a bad used helmet are, to say the least, rare. Who here buys a new helmet every time after dropping it? After knocking it against something when holding it in your hand? They are made to be sturdy, and can take serious abuse before becoming unfit for use. Issues or defects that would render it unsafe will most likely be visible during inspection. Manufacturer's recommendation will of course have you buying a new one as fast as possible. I agree that you need to use good protection for your head. I do not agree that a second hand helmet is almost certainly bad. It just warrants some common sense and a decent inspection.

No, I'm sure he's a stand-up guy and probably telling the truth about the history, but do you really want to bet your life on it?
I agree there's a financial interest in "the industry" saying to buy new all the time, but there have been actual studies done to show that even a very light crash or drop can compromise the absorbing ability of the helmet. Read that article - lots of good info. there.

Do football players get new helmets after every tackle?

sillyness....a football player would, if he could run at 100 mph! motorcycle helmets are literally "one hit wonders". they sacrifice themselves for our noggins. i have been in an ambulance and the driver brought my helmet to the hospital.. i wouldnt buy a used helmet because of the sweatiness of a mystery head wearing the thing.

Its a good helmet. I would have no problem putting it on and riding with it still but it just doesn't fit. Maybe I should just try CL...

So it is ok to sell to someone you don't know?? I fail to understand your reasoning.
If the helmet is ok, it does not matter who it is sold to. If the helmet was damaged, it should not be sold to anyone at all. I say sell it to anyone who wants to buy it. If you say it is ok, has not been in an accident, then you know for yourself that you are not harming anybody. It is up to the buyer to verify the condition of the helmet, and decide whether to purchase or not. If you know it is in good condition, what is the problem? It is not like you are forcing anyone to buy. The buyer will do so out of free will. Maybe OT was not the best place to try and sell it. You could have known that here you don't get paid in dollars, but in opinions.... (I don't know how many opinions you get for 1 dollar, I would say a lot... ![]() I would try the FS section, CL, fleabay,... all at the same time. Helmet looks good, it'll sell, no worries.

Thats my theory too G. I mean it isnt hurt. Like I said I would still wear it if it still fit. I would strap it on anybody with confidence.

Just my $.02.... As for the helmet, I would, and have, bought used 'dirt bike' helmets. I would NOT buy or sell a used road bike helmet. As a point of reference, I think I paid $40 shipped for the last one I bought. It was as new, but it was kids size.

I'd give $40 boxed and shipped, but you'd probably pay $20 to ship it... Not much sense in that...
