Awesome build, and a boat like that being constructed must mean the "Great Recession" is over, time to have a party.

Anybody own a boat?;)

bill, any scrap wood laying about? i have a buddy that makes slate turkey calls with cool wood. water resistant stuff is a good way to go.

No scrap, parts of the shops are heated w/ a wood fired boiler

Interesting blend of old and new technology. Very cool -

I tell all my friends that owning a boat(s) makes the Porsche look cheap.

You ain't seen nothin yet. This one is going to be high tech and ultra light, it will weight 30% less than a traditional build and be much stronger, stiffer and fairer.

slakjaw 03-24-2010 10:54 AM

Very very nice!

I'm in awe. For some reason I always have associated you with brakes. :) Good to see that you're not a one trick pony.

No, that is just the intermediate keel, all the tankage(oil/water/grey/black) and most of the batteries will be there. There is going to be a humongous lead fin keel hung off of that.

cathodic protection for the sail drives is the usual zinc, for topsides it's not a concern as there isn't any steel/aluminum contact, when a steel deck has aluminum topsides they are separated by f/g intermediate pieces

With that waterline, sail, keel and tumblehome, should be a reaching monster.
The rudder looks shallow to me especially as one imagines the thing heeled over but i have no doubt the architect knows better than I.

Hopefully it will be able to plane over the water in some conditions.

I drove this one the length of LI Sound in an 80knot Nor Easter, it was up on plane close to half the distance, the one on the left

the new boat will be much faster and lighter, w/ a more powerfull sail plan

kach22i 03-24-2010 11:39 AM

If it looks right, it will sail right.

It looks right to me.

enzo1 03-24-2010 11:59 AM

I'm speechless, that is awesome !

Sunroof 03-24-2010 01:08 PM

.................drawings showed a winged keel. Interesting concept though.

awesome project, I would love to see the numbers, LOA, LWL, beam, draft, ballast, displacement, sail area and hull speed.

You just got me fired up to go sailing, now we just have to get the weather to co-operate.

Besides, sailing is not like standing in the rain, I am always amazed at sailing at 7-8 knots heeled over maybe 25 degrees and scaring the crap out of landlubbers. I get the same sensation going 140 mph in my Porsche.
