Taking a spoon on a trip???

I am going from LA to Jersey and was thinking of bringing a collectible spoon to my Dad there.

Any hints, tips, advice? Please let me know.

Easy day. Bring the spoon, unloaded, to the counter on check in. Declare said spoon, put it in your checked baggage and you're off.

I recall from earlier threads on this that you want to make sure you don't put the "firearm" tag on the outside of your luggage.

Every airline website has a "spoon" section. I flew with my Dad's Colt Commander he fought in Korea and Vietnam with a few years ago, returning to sender. He wanted it back, I wanted him to have it.

NJ has a VERY broad interpretation of what an "assault weapon" is. Better check before you bring ANY semi-auto to that state, and also DO NOT bring any hollowpoints.

Just put it next to your brassie, but not so close that it will get marked up by your cleek or jigger.

New Jersey is one of a few States that do not recognize or fully recognize the Federal Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA).

see here.

INTERSTATE DRIVING

Recently, a gentleman purchasing a car (flew in from out west) was kept in New Jersey overnight for some reason. He had not planned to stay in NJ, but something (lost bags I think), kept him from leaving the state. He had a firearm transported with him, in checked baggage. When he stayed overnight in the hotel, he was arrested for having an unlicensed firearm.

FOPA requires that you are legal to possess the firearm at your start point and end-point. Good luck with New Jersey. I think you are better off shipping the firearm to a FFL and having it officially transferred to the new owner.

NJ is a police state and there's just about no failsafe legal way for an out-of-stater without a NJ FOID card to possess a gun inside the state. Laws mean nothing to their stormtroopers and regime.

I thought there was a court ruling on this? If you were reasonably taking part in "interstate travel", you were no subject to state laws?

The federal Peaceable Journey Law applies here. NJ ignores it. You have no rights there. In their defense, the cops I've dealt with there have been very cool. But they can do what they want and you're at their mercy. You are 100% guilty all the time in NJ.

I have been known to travel with spoons for work and various other reasons.

You can check it no problem if its unloaded. My only advice is to have a seperate bag that contains the spoon that you are checking, whether it is a dedicated spoon travel case, etc. Do not check it with your normal luggage. You can, it can just be a PITA, as TSA has the right to search the bag it is checked in. At San Fran one time I got the pleasure of going to a sperate room on the lower level while the TSA thoroughly went through my bag containing a spoon. On the upside, she was smoking hot, so I wasn't too upset.

Does your father have a NJ FOID? If so, just have him pick you up from the airport. Otherwise, just drive carefully to your folks house.

Ok, what no one has told you is you need a locked hard case.. if it's a hand gun even better,, as you can put the locked hard case inside a regular suitcase just make sure it's unloaded and declare it at the counter. Not sure what the storm troopers would do at the airport if they see you're carrying a long gun case..

On a side note was watching the news last night,, even the republican gov. candidate is a ***** card carrying liberal when it comes to gun control.. what an asshat!!! Started whining about cops and guns etc etc..

+1 on the locked case part. Sorry I took for granted that you knew that.

That law is roundly ignored in New Jersey.
