nah, it's nowhere near that... It'd be more like if XP had a bad Service pack, and you had to wait 2 weeks for the patch...
Nothing is as bad as Vista ;-) I've ran Snow leopard without a problem whatsoever since it came out. It comes down to what you do with it - lot of the finder was rewritten, new apps, it's somewhat expected some stuff will get missed. Apple, love it or hate it, is pretty good at fixing those though ! And those new Imacs, yowza... 27" for $1700, who needs an HDTV ! |

I wiped the drive clean and reinstalled the OS. I am using the migration tool to transfer stuff (never tried that before) as that will save me a *lot* of time and doing "clean" installs of the apps obviously didn't help before. I'm hoping it was just a corrupt install the first time around but I suspect there is a hardware issue given the flaky FW800 behavior.
Target disk mode is cool... |

Occasionally I'll need all my stuff but not the machine so I just dupe onto a Firewire pocket drive and use it as the boot volume for whatever machine I happen to be able to get my hands on. The one nice think about Apple controlling the hardware and the OS is you can clone your laptop and boot your desktop from it and the OS is all set for just about any machine you encounter so no driver errors on boot or any of that other nonsense.

This should take care of it !
Apple this week is equipping developers with a new beta of Mac OS X 10.6.2, the second maintenance and security update to the company's new Snow Leopard operating system that will perform upgrades to nearly 150 components.
The latest beta, labeled Mac OS X 10.6.2 build 10C535, comes one week after the Mac maker issued build 10C531 to address issues with Snow Leopard's Dock, ColorSync, QuartzCore and graphic driver components. This week, Apple has asked developers to continue to provide feedback on graphics drivers while also tasking them with focusing their evaluation efforts on TrackPad preferences and the ability to create virtual machines, people familiar with the matter say. As was the case with last week's beta, documentation accompanying build 10C535 reportedly lists no known issues. And while Apple has temporarily ceased its practice of providing a running list of bug fixes that will come baked into the impending release, it did identify 148 components that have seen tweaks. Among those components are AppleBacklight, Battery Menu, Dictionary, Expose, FileSync, Family Controls, Fonts, Front Row, HFS, Inkwell, iPhoto, MobileMe, OpenCL, Parental Controls, QuickTime, Screen Sharing, Spell Checker, Spotlight, Time Machine, and USB. In bare bones Delta form, Mac OS X 10.6.2 currently weighs in at roughly 480MB. It's expected for release sometime next month. |

Quick update. Machine now seems stable (knock on wood). My guess is that IT installed some 3rd party app that wreaked havoc. Or I have an intermittant problem with hardware. I'm going to daisychain a few drives and see if it hiccups.
The machine is wicked fast now. Something was wonky with the first install... |

Regarding Quicktime, I use VLC as it works with any video that I throw at it plus the navigation and subtitle support is great.
No problems on my end with SL and Time Machine is fantastic--it's saved my butt a few times and I'm surprised there's nothing as slick yet available for Windows. When I changed Macbooks after one died, I did a complete restore with Time Machine and every single program was reinstalled and not one asked for an installation key. When I opened Firefox it opened all the tabs that I had open on my previous Macbook, and all the search history etc was there. Pretty impressive.

Time Machine is quite good, and I use it. In fact I'll use it again tomorrow as I'm going to wipe the machine clean again and partition for windows (BootCamp can't move some of the files due to my migration). I'll do a backup, wipe, partition, install SL, install XP, then restore from backup. I'll wait until after I finish this damn script though...

I upgraded our Macbook Pro shortly after 10.6 came out and have had no problems. I appreciate what seems to me to be a speed bump and the extra drive space I got back.
