snow leopard a loser so far

I know I get accused by some of being an Apple fan, but while I like their products and think in general they make a superior mouse trap, I believe in calling a spade a shovel. I have to say that my week with Snow Leopard on my new laptop has made me long for my old machine with 10.5.8.

Multiple hard crashes yesterday while trying to access some daisy-chained FW800 drives. I suspect that either software and/or hardware are more sensitive to power draw through the buss. I have a powered FW800 hub coming that will hopefully address that issue. But beyond that, one mission critical application (Final Draft) ran once after install and now won't run at all. There is a more current version but it sucks to have to update to that.

The biggest flop is Quicktime X. With Quicktime 7 Pro, I could read/write a bunch of formats and codecs, and combined with Flip4Mac and a few other goodies I could do a lot of media manipulation just within the QT player. Well those days are gone, instead replaced by a "clean interface" but neutered app.

I have other friends with printing problems so I'm not alone. Evidently 10.6 was all about "under the hood" changes and improvements and those can have some nasty repercussions. 10.6.2 has been seeded and is supposed to be near RC. I hope it fixes some of what it broke.

On the positive side, the new MacBookPro is even more svelte, more rigid, and is very fast and elegant.

I'll have Win7 or XP running on my Sager soon. Vista is the worst OS I've ever used. I'll probably install XP as VBS2 won't run reliably on Vista and Win7 compatibility is unknown (but unlikely). Snow Leopard just pissed me off because I have to upgrade a few mission critical apps. It evidently is a fairly major change under the hood so I'm not surprised that things are broken. Just annoyed.

10.6 is teh suck.

I had a problem with Flash for a while until I rebooted in "safe" mode and cleared my font cache. Go figure.

My Mac Mini (early Intel-based) is getting back-dated to 10.5 because DVDs (and most other video) are herky-jerky on it under 10.6.

Sigh...hope Apple fixes this stuff PDQ.

The Quicktime thing is an issue.

Go to your Utilities folder and you will find the previous version has been moved there. Change your prefs to default to that one and you are good to go again.

I was left behind at 10.5 with my old PowerPC iMac, so no problems w/ 10.6 here!

By the time I get a new iMac, I imagine these issues will be dealt with.

I'm still running a dual 1 GHz G4... no 10.6 for me. I need to break down and get a Mac Mini already.

Sounds like Apple released its own "Vista".

How ironic.

THis is a new machine, not an upgrade so I have to go to the install dvd and add QT7 manually.

The last straw last night was trying to edit an RTF file and TextEdit hangs. I start typing and about 50 characters in I get the beachball.

I'm inclined to think that my install is corrupt (my IT dept did some things to it before I got it) or possibly bad hardware. I'm going to wipe it clean and start over, but in the meantime go back to my old laptop (running 10.5.8) to get some work done.

Ahhh, gotcha.

I'm a bit of a codec whore so if you are missing anything shot me a PM.

Ever try BBedit as a text handler? Or the free liter version if you don't need to write code, TextWrangler, both from Bare Bones.

I am not having any issues. I probably dont do as much as you but I am running a regular 24" iMac with Apple TV, Time Capsule 1TB and a couple other drives.

Then again I am a Apple noob so the snow leopard is huge improvement. IMO

I've used both of those for years, but not recently as I don't code any more. The problem is that I use FinalDraft for writing scripts and when that wouldn't run I had my production guy email me an rtf version of the script. I started typing in TextEdit and got the beachball. TextEdit ships with the OS so that shouldn't be problematic. That leads me to believe either hardware or software is corrupt. The FW 800 crashes were when I had a Raid 1 drive daisy chained with two other portable FW drives. Either there is something wrong with the FW port, or this hardware/software is more sensitive to power draw, as I've daisy chained multiple portable drives on my older laptop with no issue.

The new machine gets wiped today and tested. Of course I lost a bunch of hours installing software that will have to be reinstalled. Fun times. Luck of the draw...I ran my old PBP incredibly hard and it never blinked.

I know people with no SL problems, but I'm not most users and I beat on my machines quite hard. Evidently this is a major system change so a lot of legacy stuff won't work. If you're using what came installed on the machine probably a non-issue. Plus I'm beginning to think I might have some hardware problems.

Mistakes happen. Apple usually fixes them. MS just tries to bury theirs

We run 10.6.1 on 2 machines and Windows7 on 2 machines here at the house. All 4 are rock solid.

As a professional geek I would say that I am more of a "power user" than most and I torture these things. I have had ZERO problems with both.

For stability tho, our Ubuntu system is untouched. Its been up for over a year now with no down time.
