Always, my father taught me that a Lady never opens her own door...

DavidB911 10-28-2009 06:42 PM

I always open the door for women. It gives you a chance to check out the caboose.;)

Well, the girl i'm currently seeing. I forgot to do that on the first date, but it was a rushed date. I did hold her hand and let her go first through things. The second date I open the car door for her both times, when I picked her up and when we came back from the event. I think opening the car door and walking in front of the car is the way to go because it gives a visual image that your a great guy. I wont say what else went down the rest of the dates as I am a gentleman.:D

Every time I lean across to try I'm driving too fast and the air pressure keeps it from opening far enough.

Roll the window down first.

Yes.

Chivalrous bunch aren't you.

I confess I only do it for special occasions and I was taught better.

These days it's very seldom......although it was a lot more common before the kids were born.
Having to strap the boys in the back kinda killed the whole idea.

After 19yrs, if she doesn't know where the door handle is, she shouldn't be in the car. Besides....she doesn't open my door when she picks me up from the pub. hehehe

What Byron said. I open the door for women, not just cars. They frequently appear surprised by it. Only had one go all women's libber on me in my entire life.

It is a dying habit.

If you really want to impress, always walk on the curb side of the side walk while walking down the street. Also, while crossing a street, switch sides so that you're always on the side that's closest to oncoming traffic. I was on a date with a girl a few weeks ago, and she was the first girl ever to notice that...it blew her away.

There's and old joke about guys doing it when either the girl is new or the car is new.

Its the gentlemanly thing to do I've been married 30+ years. It's not a big deal with my wife, I do it when we are going some place special and I like to catch her off guard every so often it always brings a big smile to her face.

Common courtesy - at least the way I was brought up. Other doors, restaurants, wherever, I'll open the door out of simple courtesy to the other, male or female. Common courtesy - maybe not so common anymore, don't care; feels right and respectful to me so that's what I do.

don't they have their own hands?

THIS MORNING: thanks to the bay bridge closure, i found myself riding a train to work. i grabbed a great seat, jammed in ipod, relaxed. the VERY NEXT stop, a lady with a cane comes on board...i avoided eye contact..and waited to see if anyone would give a seat to the old lady. SOB's! nobody!. i gathered up my stuff and offered my seat. she took it...and i stood nutstoass with everyone else jammed in. hated it. most people never even looked up! courtesy is dead. let's face it.

I guess I learned that when I was a kid too and still do it today. Several women I've dated have noticed and asked why I switched sides to always be on the curb side and I'd say "So you don't get bit by a horse." That always evokes a puzzled look and I tell them that I'd read that the custom goes back to horse and buggy days when horses were hitched along the curb and some would bite if you got too close.

Also, I go on, housewives back in those days would commonly empty their dishpans by dumping them out of second story dwellings over store fronts and being closer to the curb meant standing a better chance of detting doused. Ah, chivalry and gallantry - they seldom fail to impress! :)

One exception was a number of years ago when I took a lady out dancing on a first date. I opened the car door for her when I picked her up and she looked at me kinda funny. When we got to the club I came around, opened the car door and also opened the door into the club for her. As I did so, without a smile she said "I do know how to open doors for myself!" So I said "Sorry. I wasn't quite sure." Had one drink, we didn't dance, took her home and dumped the feminazi (OMG! I'm sounding like Limbaugh!) off at the curb. I let her open her own door - funny, she had to ask me how to get out (it was an old Porsche and she didn't have a clue :D).

Needless to say, there was no second date. I remember chuckleing to myself as I drove away, hoping she broke a fingernail pulling the tab. :)

No, it's not dead. Classy guys like you still pay it forward. I like to think that when you do something like this, down the road, someone else is going to give a seat to your mother or grandmother...

Steve opens the car doors on date nights but other than that, I bail in on my own. Lest you think he lack chivalry, let me share the rest of the story. For the past 20 years he has scraped windshields on my car every cold morning.

Twenty years. To hell with the car door - the windshield de-icing every winter morning makes up for it in spades.

Chivalry lives, men have honor, and the world is a better place for it.
