Need info on sandblasters
So I'm getting into the mood to work on my track car project again.. which sucks because it's winter... but I'm at least gathering tools, data, and resources for next summer when I will have time and weather to finish it.
One thing I need to do is sandblast a lot of old parts. Particularly needing it is the engine bay, which is begging to be repainted a nice white sheen. So I'm looking at these external-type sandblasters, the ones that are like a vessel you pour the sand into with the external lance (as opposed to a sandblasting cabinet) I've used once of these before to sandblast a tube frame formula car chassis and it sorta sucked, took forever, not a lot of power, but did the job in the end. That one was old as dirt so maybe that was the issue. Anyone have an experience with the different types? What kind of line pressures and flow rates are needed from the air compressor to make one of these work best? Theres several on craigslist right now from 100-400$. I think I would be willing to throw 150-200 at one. Thoughts?

How big is your compressor? I did the underside of my 911 with a large one. But I had a 25HP compressor.

Considering that these things operate continuosly, I'd think you'd need a good-sized compressor. I'm thinking like a two-piston, 100 gallon minimum.

I love blasting stuff. Get the biggest compressor you can afford or plan on taking breaks now and then to let your compressor catch up. Get a good respirator and mask. And get a good dryer for your line. My sandblaster gets all wet inside from the volume of air going through it.

And............. don't use sand, use a blasting medium, but not actual sand, unless you don't care about your lungs!
