Depends on the definition of "made their own." If you mean they did an interesting variation that stands alone, that is one thing. If you mean the cover eclipsed the original that is something different.
Along the lines of the former: Purple Haze - Hendrix/The Cure |

Willie Dixon would have to be mentioned too.
And re Hendrix/Voodoo Chile - there is ONLY one version. I spent a whole night listening to side 3 of Electric Ladyland. LSD 25 - buck a hit (I guess you had to be there so to speak). I like Stevie too but . . . Ian

Hmm, really?
I like what Stevie did with Jimi's stuff (I'm a huge fan of both of them), but the only one that I think may have surpassed the original was "Little Wing". Jimi's version from Axis Bold as Love (I think that was it) was good, but the SRV version sends chills down my spine. For me it's one of those songs that's almost physically tangible. It's as if you could swim in it.

And speaking of Leonard Cohen, Jennifer Warnes did an awfully good job with her Famous Blue Raincoat disc of his songs.

I knew Lindley covered it, but Miller - wow!
