Office Space is my life

Just a vent here, but it's getting really scary. Empty rhetoric, bosses that think buzzwords are a substitute for leadership, more bosses than I can count (or have met), total dysfunction. Lets not forget continually pressing to get more work and hours out of employees, while simultaneously cutting benefits. And me? I work hard, get good reviews, but I just don't care anymore. I used to genuinely take pride in my job but it has sucked me dry. I'm sick of the BS and sick of the broken promises. Currently I need 3 promotions just to QUALIFY for my position. Yay.

Probably preaching to the choir here, but I need to vent. I need a drink.....

Peter Gibbons: The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter: Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Good stuff.

uh, yeah, . . . listen, we need to talk to you about your avatar. :-)

Just had layoffs here, (today! Third time this year) basically no second shift, so when it gets busy (and it does/will at the drop of a hat) OT will become mandatory. Oh Boy.

(I was beyond tired of 60 plus hour days long ago, the money is no longer that important to me)

I feel your pain, brother.

I use my real name here, so I can't be specific to my situation. But I feel your pain, too, man. May 2010 be a better year for all of us.

Maybe you should get some therapy:

Peter Gibbons: So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.
Dr. Swanson: What about today? Is today the worst day of your life?
Peter Gibbons: Yeah.
Dr. Swanson: Wow, that's messed up.

I've survived 4 rounds this year. I know I should be greatful to have a job, yada yada yada. That eventually only goes so far. Especially when its repeatedly used as an excuse for abusing employees.

with all the empty cubicles from the laid off workers you should make a cubicle taj mahal for yourself, perhaps with a maze to get to the cubicle

Thats my biggest problem with the economy, no matter how well a company may be doing, its always "things are tough, no raises, benefits, 401k, etc." just to try and help their own bottom line and get a bonus.
I asked for a raise and of course, got shot down. It took me threatening to leave before they gave me a raise (although at 50% of what I was asking)....so now I don't believe a word they say about the companies situation.... Bad place to be. I didn't take a raise last year because things were slowing down and thought I would do my part. I find out things were fine last year, even though all we hear was things were not.

Peter Gibbons: It's not just about me and my dream of doing nothing. It's about all of us. I don't know what happened to me at that hypnotherapist and, I don't know, maybe it was just shock and it's wearing off now, but when I saw that fat man keel over and die - Michael, we don't have a lot of time on this earth! We weren't meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.
Michael Bolton: I told those fudge-packers I liked Michael Bolton's music.
Peter Gibbons: Oh. That is not right, Michael.

My company hasn't officially been giving raises for a year now......except if you threaten to quit. Multiple people have left the company recently, in each case they have offered to match or beat the offer. Great way to get a raise, and telling that in each case the people have still chosen to leave.

Pup,

We have all been, "junior" knuckleheads, there for the seeming abuse by our, "betters".

You are a smart young man so I assume you're already cataloging your thoughts for when you are senior and in charge of young engineers.

Never forget the management mistakes you are witnessing but make sure you take the best in breed in your mental thumb drive.

Then, when given the chance, be the guy in charge you want(ed) now.

All the best, Matt.

Paul, for better or worse there's always an opportunity to learn. I never lose sight of that fact.

Naturally...exactly why you'll work through this patch.

I had a few really miserable CO's, as stupid as they were stolid. One CO was so bad all the junior officer (of which I was one), called his time in command, "The Reign of Error".

Hang in my Friend.

I feel your pain...humans were not meant to spend 30 years of their lives in a cubicle staring at a monitor (or 4 in my case) for 14 hours a day and then drop dead from some screwed up disease. If this is what "civilization" is..then I don't want it.

Heard on the radio that "worker productivity" was up ~10%. I don't think people realize that means that profits were up but workers were being laid off.

That's great. Too bad some of our leadership would actually utilize it.
