Thanksgiving in ATL - Please tell me there is a drive planned!

Looks like I am heading to ATL for Thanksgiving - 25th through 30th. Is anyone planning to go on a drive?

As much as I like my wife's grandfather, I get EXTREMELY BORED while I am there. The tv is horrid and nobody watches football, there is no Internet, no computer, etc. Sure, I could tolerate this for 2 days but not for nearly 5!

Someone please help me.

Dude, the only easy day was yesterday.

One reason why I love my wife:

One of my sisters wants us to come down to South Carolina for T-Day. I have zero desire to brave the 8 1/2 hour drive only to suffer tedium at the hands of her incredibly boring husband. He could make paint undry, slowly, inexorably.

But, my daughter has an opportunity to ride in college, either at USC or College of Charleston. So they want to go early and visit both schools. My sister went to CoC and then law school at USC so the three of them will be roaming the state, a four wheel hen party. My son also wants to go since his cousin has an apartment and he gets to stay with him. Much joy for all...except me.

This morning my sister calls to confirm...

"Yes, we're coming, but Paul can't make it...he'll be on business right up until T-day and we want to get down early."

Bless her. They'll return on Friday.

My advice to you? If you have a laptop, go to Verizon and tell them you want to try a wireless network device. They'll let you try one for 30 days for about $50 clams. Internet problem solved.

BTW, I'm home today 'cause we're getting hammered by the remnants of IDA. Wow.

Usually, the place to catch up with Atlanta P-heads is at the Avenue car show every first sunday of the month. Years ago we had an Atlanta social chairman (R-22) who got a few get togethers with drives up to the Georgia Mountains. Since he left for the world of BMW, I have yet to see anything going on with group drives.

So, with that let me recommend that if you have about 2-4 hours on a sunny day while your here, head north up 400 to Dahlonega. Once in Dahlonega (a very quaint little town) look for the sign to Blairsville. Follow 11/29 to Blairsville on some of the best twisties the north GA mountains have to offer. The road switches from one to two lanes up and down Blood Mountain providing optimum apex driving. When you get to Blairsville find Pig Country USA bar-b-que for a great lunch. Heading back to Dahlonega turn left (east) on 180 to Brass Town Bald the highest spot in Georgia. If your tranny and brakes are not up to par, forget it! Its straight up the barber pole and straight down! Once up there though the view is fantastic from the outpost. Your Headin back you can take 17 to Helen and cut back through Cleveland to Dahlonega. These roads were made for a Porsche!

Maybe some folks might chime in regarding a drive north during the holiday.

Enjoy your stay

Hope it doesn't get too bad up there! My family lives near Richmond and they have a place in Windmill Point (Northern Neck). The weather reports aren't looking good.

God bless your wife! Mine said that I didn't have to go and she would be ok with me heading up to VA to see my family (and have my dad take off my dog's balls). I might just have to do that.

Thanks Bob! I appreciate it! Weather permitting I will certainly make that drive. Been anxious to get to the mountains this year.

Yeah, it's been quiet here recently...

I'd be up for a drive, haven't done that in quite a while. Getting too cold/wet for the bike.

Two words: sports bars

Also, pick up a copy of Creative Loafing and check out the music scene.

To add a bit, the drive coming back from Blairsville to Dahlonega can also be routed through another small town, Suches, Georgia. Either way, you will definitely have a great time. Here's a quick little Google map I threw together for you.

"A" - Suches, Georgia
"B" - Blairsville, Georgia
"C" - Dahlonega, Georgia
And circled in RED on the eastern edge of the map is Helen, Georgia.

Cool. I think I am staying in Dunwoody. So it looks like a 2 hour trip up to Blairsville.

I'll hit Pig Country USA for lunch and then drive back.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. Actually starting to look forward to the trip.

Let me know what day you do the drive. I may be able to join you if you want. I'm off the whole week and the wife is dog sitting so I'll be ready to get out of here.

The mapped area is only about 3 hours from me.
