And if it turns out that this...person...is a real honest login, I'll publicly castigate myself. I have my own flail.

In this case, a fake login (he'll be trying to sell Chinese electronics or shoes or purses or links to his website soon).

In a more general case, it's the verb troll (as in, toss a fishing hook in the water, wave it around a bit, see who bites).

I saw the name on the front page as "newest member" and, for some strange reason, I felt it was trouble.

Dunno why, maybe the fact that I've already found 3 or 4 random sites that he's joined today, or the likely virus filled Ruskie website he's pimping...who knows.

That isn't a troll.

A troll is an attention whore. That guy is in all likelyhood a spammer.

Eh, one coins, lots of different faces.

This troammer (spool?) is good, he even created a signature and put an avatar in, so he looks like a normal person. I'm sure he'll avoid detection tomorrow when he posts something in 8 different totally inappropriate places.

I've seen her stuff. She was a High Class Troll, it takes some considerable time and effort to troll a board as long and as hard as some of them do, I commend them

The spammers...well, they're just vermin.

Then there's some worldwide trolls that have way too much time of their hands, like trev006. Dude was on dozens if not scores of forums, posting new videos every few days. How much time does that take!?

That's not for trolling, that's for improving one's Google ranking, etc.

Typically, they won't post, but their profile is available to be slurped by the search engines.

If you look at the profile, it generally has a link to what it is they are hawking, including some specific meta-tags that the search engines use to categorize their (now amazing) popularity.

I usually get about 500 of those attempted account creations per day on a few boards I run.

Before I implemented good account creation protection, I'd find that only a very small minority of them would actually post anything. Those are the "stupid" ones that draw unnecessary attention to themselves, and get themselves deleted.

Trolls, on the other hand, are people that like to push the buttons of other posters in the hopes of getting a (usually overblown) reaction from them. Hence the term "don't feed the trolls"... as in, "don't reply to the obvious bait".

Never thought about that...but the image of search engines slurping people's profiles is kinda disgusting.

Thanks for calling this to my attention - #casino.ru has been banned.

Odds are, that user is a spammer. And you can bet those odds at his casino.

Oh, and in the case of many spammers - they post but the members cannot see their first posts -- that gives us mods a chance to do preemptive cleanup.
