LA trip - have a few questions

I'm headed to LA tomorrow for a few days and had a couple questions for those of you that live in the area...

Cell phones in cars: hands-free OK or no calls at all?

Radar detector: legal? Worth it, or not needed?

I may head up to the Rock Store on Mulholland over the weekend. Which day is better attended, Saturday or Sunday?

Peterson Museum any good? Any others, car related?

Any local art museums have Pollocks or Rothkos?

Thanks,
JR

Hands free is legal.

I don't use my radar detector. Don't speed. Just go with flow of traffic.

Both days are plenty busy at the Rock Store.

Never been to Peterson.

Don't know about Pollocks or Rothkos, but the Broad wing at LACMA has some cool stuff (there was a massive Serra piece there some time back). Across the street from Peterson too.

Ping local Pelicans for beer/coffee. It's a moral imperative.

hands free is ok.

radar? no, but no one is going to catch you, you wont be driving very fast anyways on LA roads. My dad's radar picks up doors radar at grocery stores more than the police.

Peterson Museum is fun/cool, plus you get to see where Notorious BIG got shot. The Getty is a must see.

Have fun, enjoy the weather. If you are taking your Porsche, go give the Santa Monica Mountains a visit for some fun roads.

The Getty Museum is fantastic need reservations.

Another very cool car museum is the Meryl Norman (Sa n Sylmar) Collection in Sylmar. Its free and no reservation 100s of cars! You need a weekend reservation if you want a tour of the collection across the street of beautiful clocks, piano player machines, its very cool as well.

The Petersen has the Trans Am reunion display now- a couple porsches are part of it (they ran in the 2 liter class in 66- 70) . Place is good for a few hours tops.

Lacma is right across the street so it will make for a full day

I would really suggest going to Cars and Coffee in Irvine on Saturday.

It is automotive nirvana...

Don't know if there are any Pollacks or Rothkos on public display in L.A. Like nostatic suggests, the Broad (pronounced Brode) wing at LACMA would be a place to check. Or MOCA in downtown. I don't recall either of those artists at the Getty Center (which is different than the more classical Getty Villa in Malibu) but I could be wrong. Getty Center is still a neat place to visit. You don't need reservations to go--it's free. But you need reservations for parking. The alternative is to park somewhere else and catch the bus to the museum, as you can't park in the local neighborhoods.

I've only been to the Petersen (across the street from LACMA) once. I thought it was a little disappointing, and that was with the Porsche 50th anniversary exhibit. It's a quick walk-through museum. Interestingly, there are no entrances from the street. In homage to the subject matter and L.A. car culture, you can only get in through the parking garage.

Friday night you can catch cruise night (and some Pelicans) at Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake. Mostly American iron.

Sunday has an epic Cars and Coffee in Irvine, and the one in Calabasas (where it seemed the average guy showed up in an F430) recently moved locations to somewhere else in the Valley.

My radar detector has saved me a few times on the hwys. there. I usually take the bike, so no cell phones while driving for me. Do a drive up Coldwater to Mulholland and go see the sunset in Santa Monica or anywhere north of there. Will be there again in a few weeks. Be sure to hook up with some local Pelicans for beer.

Also, please look out for bikes lane splitting on the highways. I've only ever seen it in CA, where it is legal and customary. Takes some getting used whether you're in a car or on a bike.

I have never been to the Calabasas cars and coffee. Are there as many cars to see as the Irvine one? How do you find out where they have gone in the valley. Getting out to the valley is a heck closer then OC.

FWIW, I never use a radar detector in the city of L.A. Only on road trips. Just don't go speeding around, traffic moves fast enough here when it's moving to just blend in. The local police agencies use radar in certain places but it's not really all that prevalent. Detectors are legal everywhere in the U.S. except Virginia.

That might work for me, as it's early enough for me to make my meeting that morning. Where, 'zactly, is it held?

Guns are not illegal, but it is illegal to carry a loaded gun. You are allowed to keep it in your hotel room. During transport it needs to be unloaded, locked, and in a trunk/inaccessable to the driver. Open carry IS allowed in unincorporated areas of the state.

For Cars and Coffee - Irvine.

It's held at the Ford/Mazda buildings (not sure what they are called - it's a big campus and is directly in site of the freeway). The address is:

7905 Gateway Blvd
Irvine CA

When you get there, park the rental car in the side lot (away from the gathering place). Then stroll over. Don't worry, you won't miss it... It's really huge. Bring a camera with well charged batteries. There's cars that show up there which normally are only seen in museums.

We won't be there (live in oregon) but this is a really bad shot of when we did go there. Steve got to meet Chip Foose. Very nice fellow who digs spyders!

Used to be right off the Valley Circle exit from the Ventura Fwy. Sponsored by Village Coffee Roasters. Then it was shut down a month or two ago. Now it's some place in Tarzana: No more Super car sunday???(In Calabasas) Haven't gone to the new place, yet. In the past, the harder core guys (maybe 30-40?) would show up every Sunday, 8-10. The last Sunday of the month was the big get-together, with about 100+ cars. I think that's the gathering that pissed off the other stores in the mini-mall.
