Home Weather Stations?

I am looking for a present for my dad. He is always hard to buy because he just goes and gets whatever he wants.

As a former pilot he has always been into the weather. There are some neat home weather station on the market. I am leaning towards the Davis Vantage Vue. It is about $350.00 but it does not have a interface for a computer unless you buy a software interface for another $150.00.

My question is do any of you have experience with weather stations like this? I am looking for opinions on what is good, bad or just OK.

Professional quality wireless weather stations and software for the home, education, boating and more by Davis

THe Davis Vantage Pro which I think usually runs about $700 is the system that most of the weather folks really want. I would think that the other Davis stuff would also be good, but then you've got the software issue that you mentioned above.

These are also common stations (I don't have any of these)

Oregon Scientific: WMR 100, WMR 200, WMR 968

La Crosse seems to be used too. I think they mostly make lower end stuff.

It's not uncommon for folks to use Weather Display software with their stations Weather Display - the Weather Station software

And this is a place that lots of folks go to order them.

Weather Stations at AmbientWeather.com: Weather Station Equipment, Weather Radios, Weather Instruments

I'm slowly (very slowly ) building my own system from 1-wire components. So far I have some temp sensors. I'm hoping to get a couple of humidity sensors for Christmas. I've got 4 temp sensors with 3 in production (1 outside, 1 in the attic, and 1 inside). I really like knowing what's going on at my house.

I bought one for my dad a few years ago. I do not recall who made it. This was a wireless system. He already had other components (rain guage, thermometer) but really needed an anemometer. The problem is that because of FCC issues on transmitting, the wind speed and direction are only transmitted to the base station periodically, like once a minute. So instantanious readings are a no-go. Kind of a problem with wind indication more than the other parameters.

Thanks for the responses. It will be used as a neat toy. He has a the internet driven weather displays but that is showing what is happening at the airport on the other side of town.

Check out Weather Underground. Enter your or his zip and see data from the weather stations in his neighborhood. You can see what model stations are being used. Davis Vantage Pro wireless with fan-aspirated temperature sensor, UV sensor, and remote windspeed/direction sensor, is what most home weather station geeks seem to want. But realistically you can get the wireless model w/o the other upgrades and he can spring for them later. If he gets really into it. Placement of the sensors is critical.

Oh, I have to say - I do not own one, I've just been researching them obsessively on various weatherbug websites for a year now.
