Your thoughts on New Hampshire?
I've been offered (very tentatively) a fairly senior management position at my company's campus in Cambridge, MA.
My boss gave a me a few days to mull it over. I (from a moral and ethical standpoint) cannot and will not live in Massachusetts. I can, however, handle NH with a smile. So, I'm looking at the Salem area in southern NH as a possible home to commute to Cambridge during the week. Anyone from the Granite State have any feedback on the area?

Google maps says Salem NH to Cambridge Mass will take 42 minutes. I would plan on nearly double that unless you leave very early in the morning and can get out of the office very early in the afternoon seeing as how a major part of your commute will be on 93. Granted I haven't driven on that road a lot but nearly every time I have driven on it there has been fairly heavy traffic. Otherwise it seems like it would rock to live in NH compared to MA, although it seems like you would still have to put up with a lot of the horse **** of MA if you were working here full time.

I live in Lowell, MA about 3 miles from the NH border at Pelham, NH... right on major highways etc. For the first couple of months that I lived in Lowell I was commuting to Cambridge (close to the Museum of Science) on 93 and my commute was around 1h15. That being said, I love NH... great state.

I don't know if I could handle the commute. People do it, but I don't know if I could be one of them.

That's not a commute i would look forward to.
If you do it before 6 am no problem.

Jeff (P-O-P) is commuting by train. That would make it do-able. NH is very very nice.
You will need to pickup a winter sport, so you don't go stir crazy. NH and the areas nearby, have some great skiing. NH is about the only spot I'd live in the Northeast. MA is a distant second, but you have to "know people" to make it work. I lived in MA for 7 years.

Come'on up!!!! No sales tax or crazy guns laws!!! If you hunt, stay where you are, cause you'll be going back every fall!!! I live in Nashua, 20 minutes away from Salem. Stay away from Mass, for living anyways. Leaf-peeping capital!!!

There is nothing good about MA. You would need a helicopter to commute. Be careful of the weirdos that live in NH though.

I used to live in Watertown, which is adjacent to Cambridge.
I feel you on the New Hampshire thing- MA was brutal on the taxes and hippy nonsense. But that is going to be a hellish commute. |

The commute is.... well the commute. However lots and we're talking about half the state of NH (ok maybe exagerating a bit) decends upon Boston every weekday morning and leaves every evening. They come from all the major arteries crossing the NH/MA border.
There is really no easy way to get around the commute time and live in NH unless you do something like switch your arrival and departure times. Which borders on the crazy or impractical. Its the trade-off made for living in NH. If you manage to drive to a commuter rail stop and take the train in/out, you will save some time and at least have some time where you could read or do light work, but don't expect it to be a huge time difference. It's all about personal trade-offs really. There are pros/cons to residing in MA or in NH. You have eliminated MA as a residence option so hopefully the pros to residing in NH outweigh the cons for you. Best wishes! |

If you plan on owning your home, property taxes are outrageous in NH, makes up for the no income or sales tax.
