Yankees to reduce payroll!
To $185 million...

Why is it the Yankees fault if they dont care about spending too much money? They did win the championship. Their team was better than the other 29. You do realize that payroll doesn't equal to championships. I think most of the last champions from 2001 until 2008 weren't even top 5 in payroll.

Think again:
From 2000: Yankees, D Backs, Angels, Marlins, Red Sox, White Sox, Cardinals, Red Sox, Phillies, Yankees. That's 7/10 with at least top 10 payrolls. I have no problem if the Yankees want to spend a little more than another team, I just think that outspending the next team by a full third is a bit ridiculous. You do realize that the Yankees spent DOUBLE what the #10 payroll team (Seattle) spent last year right? They spent 5 1/2 TIMES as much as the last payroll team, the Marlins. The Yankees spent more than the Marlins, Padres, Pirates and Nationals COMBINED. The only good news is that the Yankees are going to spend themselves right into a salary cap. It's a classic case of excess, if they would restrain themselves just a little and keep their salary anywhere NEAR the other top teams it wouldn't be so obvious. A few more World Series titles in the next few years and it will be obvious that baseball will not be competitive without a salary cap.

I love the game.
I hate MLB with the flaming passion of a million flaming suns. It (and its lack of parity) is the biggest joke in professional sports. Unfortunately it also enjoys a Congressionally-sanctioned monopoly, so there won't ever be any real competition. Instead, I wish dearly for: - salary caps - league parity - INTRA-league parity (for both the AL & NL) - an end to the reign of free agency and a return to players that have club loyalty - an end to the era of the long ball (re-elevate the pitchers' mounds, stop building parks designed to generate 3-4 home runs per game) There's little better than going to the ballpark on a nice summer day and watching a good competitive game. That said, the fact that MLB teams are one's only real choice (other than pick-up games at the local park, or beer league games) sucks. I despise MLB but I love the game from both a strategic and tactical standpoint.

I was a lukewarm baseball fan at best until about 6 years ago. I started following the Astros a bit while I lived in Houston and went to a few games. Then when I moved up to D/FW I picked up the Rangers. I had always wanted to be a Rangers fan, but the team was so horrible that it was tough to follow them, especially from a distance.
Our first year here we went to about 5 or 6 games and I started to get interested in the team and the game again. Last year I bought a 1/2 season ticket package and went to about 15 games. I followed the team the entire season and I think I watched at least part of every game this year. That led to research on the stats of baseball and how they are generated and what they mean. The more I watch baseball the more I love it. It is such a deep game, the levels of strategy are really unmatched by any other sport. Agree with PoP about the salary cap and wanting more parity. Also agree that there is nothing better than a day at the ballpark with your kids. This season I have a full season ticket package and have been following the offseason moves daily. Can't wait for spring!

If you enjoy baseball but could not care less about MLB, try AA baseball if you have a team close by.... i.e. the Corpus Christi Hooks play in a beautiful stadium, the top ticket price is $9 and on Monday night, drinks and hotdogs are 1$. Of course they still whack you 7$
 for a beer but you can always just say no.

Minor league baseball rocks.
We have the Frisco RoughRiders locally and the Fort Worth Cats as well. Both are great times for not much cash. Minor league players are also a lot better about signing autographs and the entire experience is geared towards the kids.
