If they're going to go up to 25 points for a win, why not award points farther back than just 10th place. The single point for 10th place will be just about worthless if the winner is getting 25 points.
Once again they've proven what idiots they are, but at least it's not as stupid as their medal idea.

I understand what they are trying to accomplish and I agree with it in theory. With a larger grid, they don't want people way at the back to start playing NASCAR (or lapped traffic messing with front runners) because they WAY far out of the points. However, I think to really accomplish this they do need to extend the points further back into the grid--like at least half way.

A lot of drivers have pay-per-point contracts. That should be interesting (and expensive) to sort out.
As the F1 curmudgeon, I'd like to see the old 9-8-6-5-4-3 system back in place, (but at least they didn't go with that stupid gold medal idea that Grandma Ecclestone cooked up).

It seems that it won't change much.
From Autosport: "Under the 2010 system, the result of this year's championship would have been exactly the same. Jenson Button would have beaten Sebastian Vettel (243 points to 203), with Rubens Barrichello third (187), Mark Webber fourth (178), Lewis Hamilton fifth (123), Kimi Raikkonen sixth (119), etc. See Autosport Ian

That's because, proportionally, they didn't change much. First, second, and third are the same as before (just multiplied by 2.5).
Where the old system was 10 8 6 5 4 3 2 1 The new system is (after dividing the new points by 2.5) 10 8 6 4 3.2 2.4 2 1.6 1.2 0.8 0.4 Instead of fiddling with points, I wish they'd do something to reduce turbulence, decrease dependence on aero, and increase dependence on mechanical grip. Formula One used to be so much fun to watch. Now you watch Q3 and that's the race. |
