No price? Do they finance?

Pretty interesting that a rich American can own an warplane superior to that employed by some national air forces.

"Pride Aircraft is very pleased to be the only place you can get one (or two!) We look forward to hearing from qualified buyers."

I'm guessing a "qualified buyer" might have some pretty significant ???'s attached.

It would be pretty cool to show up at Bob's Big Boy on Friday night with one of those. Something even Leno doesn't have.

I hear Flankers don't have as good a resale value as the F-15...as soon as you taxi them off the lot, they depreciate like crazy. They lack seat warmers as well...

C'mon, David. A real freakin' jet that goes Mach whatever trumps a helicopter-turbine-in-a-motorcycle anyday.

I know. But I thought I'd mention it since you brought up Leno. The story goes he took the bike to Bob's one Friday night, and burned a hole in the f/g front end of a Corvette that was too close to him. Now he doesn't ride the bike that much any longer.

Seriously though, some bloke flies a Russian fighter jet out of Burbank Airport now and then. It's loud, fast and would be terrifying if armaments were on it.

Maybe it is Leno...

I've seen him stuck in traffic on the 134 to his studio; he in his little Yamaha-powered Festiva.

i remember right after the wall fell, you would see ads in trade-a-plane for egyptian surplus mig-15s. the things were going for less than $80,000.

kept hinting to my parents, and christmas was coming up. but they didn't go for it.

My uneducated thought is that owning and flying one of those as a private individual seems quite iffy, if you love your life.

How do you get top-notch training in flying a SU-27?
How do you get enough on-going flying time to stay skilled?
How do you get a top-notch ground crew to service it?

Almost seems like you'd have to not only import and support the plane, but also import and employ the flight instructor, ground crew, ground equipment, tools, spares, manuals, etc. I bet its a thing where buying the plane is just the tip of the iceberg.

Any pilots here who can comment? Maybe Larry Ellison can log on and tell how he does it.

I think that would be the biggest issue. How many American (or European)aircraft mechanics know the ins-and-outs of a modern Russian fighter jet? If you lived in Eastern Europe, you might be OK since they use a lot of Russian equipment...but not stateside.

well first and formost you got to be a very sick puppy to own one because of the obvious: expense.

its not something you fly every week or month. it is labor intensive, you need to hire a REAL RUSSIAN that speake english and is trustworthy. like trust your ASS on him. and that in and of itself will be spendy. lets go over a few expenses created by this toy.

1) insurance ooooo baby BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ if taking people for rides for pay it then becomes a "commercial" and rates skyrocket(excuse the pun).
2) hanger
3)tools
4)english speaking mechanics from russian air force who worked on that model.
5)flight assoc. fees
6)training
7) fuel/oil/toilet paper
8)parachute
9)tie down/hanger fees at airports you go to.
10)repair and overhaul as per flightlog hours
11)updated american avionics
12)probably some kind of tax levied by u.s. gubbermint
13)it probably would become an "experimental" cuz their out of production
14) certs that its airworthy by FAA/NTSB upon arrival on u.s.shores
15) home/condo/apt for russian mechanics
16)hos for russian mechanics
17)pallets of vodka for russian mechanics and their hos
18) credit card for russian mechanics
19) car for russian mechanics-probably a pinto will do and they'll be happy.
20)your arse surgically "widened" so everytime you push "start", the dollars can be POOED out without too much pain and suffering.
21) an APU while yer on the ground

and finally a damn good understanding of reading flight maps and understanding completely "NO FLY" zones around u.s. military installations.

Including our own...

Our F-22s are the tits, but thanks to O we have only a very, very small handful, so the bulk of air defense duties rest on the 40 year old F-15C, a plane that is pretty much completely worn out and inferior to the SU-27 from a flight performance standpoint.

Crazy.

didnt have to read the ad.............i werk at a private aeropuerto. deal with "vintage", "rare", "odd", "different", "wierd", "one-off", every single day!

why do people sell things?

why do people dee-vorce juan another?

cuz their sick and tired of the PITA POO!

these are being sold because some CLOWN with more money than brains thought they would be "TACK-TI-KOOL!

once into it and after a few "sphincter slapping shut "at mach 10 rides, all of a sudden annuals come do. a tire goes flat, the APU doesnt werk, the parachute gets shredded, the brakes get worn cuz he comes in short and hot, the a/c blows hot, the russians are drunk on vodka 24/7, his wife dee-vorces him cuz he spends 24/7/365 at the hanger "bench racing" with fellow jet jockeys reliving the "old days" of korea or the "nam", his weenie gets spanked by the FAA for some low flying stunts over populated areas, wear parts start doing what wear parts do best-"wear out" , and suddenly it just aint fun anymore, and his arse just cant POO out any more bucks at MACH 10, and the entire dream folds.

ask me how i know. see this all the time. it is writtian in granite.

admitted i would go for a ride in a heart beat. but to own one if i hit the powerball , never. actually i wouldnt buy one damn "vintage" anything if i hit the powerball. vintage =OLD. old = BREAKAGE. breakage = AUGER IN. auger in = ES IST TODT!

plus what the hell is that worth if ya can't BLOW THE HELL OUT OF SOMETHING! then i might give it serious thought.

Is it illegal to hunt in a jet? Can you convert a vulcan cannon to semi-auto?

Yeah - I put my checkbook away once I read that all weapon systems have been disabled...
