i finally had to turn a neighbor down, when he asked for free car work...

damn, he knocked on my door, and sees me folding boxer shorts, and loading my duffel bag. his toyota truck has been making a noise. for one entire week, i have been asking them to describe the noise..from the front?, back?, with RPM's?, with wheel speed.?.etc. they cannot put it into words.. i lubed the driveshaft last night with a headlamp. i hear nothing..ever. they took it to BIG-O thinking wheel bearings. i told them i heard zero evidence of that. the big-o guy pulled a miracle, and found the noise. it is the passenger headlight housing. you can mimic the noise by tapping it, and causing it to "chirp" annoyingly. (they actually said, "chirp! is a good word, after i said it) he asked me if i could fix it tonight. errr...NO. i would have to take his entire grill off to get to the stupid headlight housing. he was bummed, but damn...i need to pack, i need to drink some PORT, and cozy up to the wife. and i need to get some sleep so i can rip my pelican holiday gift exchange box open! timing is crappy...maybe next weekend.

mmmmmmm PORT...tawny PORT!

Tell him to stick some cardboard in there and wedge it tight. Fixed.

You need to get to the port now! I'm a half bottle of chard ahead of you.

Is he the kind of guy that will return favors?. I just agreed today to help a buddy out on Sunday , he broke a rear coil spring and punctured a tire. He is always there when I need him. He does concrete work, and has a backhoe, and a bobcat. I really did not want to work this weekend, but I am sure it will pay back in dividends later. It does get old though, seems as if I could work 7 days a week 12 hours a day, oh wait, I almost do now. There always seems to be someone in need

Hey, forget the cardboard, tell him to turn up the volume on the radio!
This cures many strange noises. :-)

The most successful business I ever ran is the years I worked on my friends motorcycles for free.....

One of my neighbors bought a project dune buggy on the assumption that I would get it running for him. He never asked ahead of time or anything, he just bought it, then shows up at my house with the "I just bought this VW dune buggy; when can you help me get it running?" I showed him the 1957 deluxe I'm working, and told him it would probably be about the same time the sun is reduced to a black lump the size of a basketball. The buggy is still sitting in his front yard with a blue tarp over it.
