3G is soooooo nice

I guess I'm going to have to switch to AT&T. Everytime I'm in Mexico, it is soo nice to have the 3G working.

It's just another cell standard, which has been around a while. iphone Finally brought their hardware up to this standard.

Got an iPhone for my wife for Xmas. Really hope it works well around here. My Blackberry is AT&T and has much better coverage than my Verizon cell phones.

Pretty sure I've ha AT&T's 3G for about 2 years now.

But since I use my cell phone for nothing but making phone calls an the occasional text message... I have no idea what it does different than non-3G.

Likely ... Verizon had it starting in 2003.

3G
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a family of standards for mobile telecommunications defined by the International Telecommunication Union,[1] which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well as DECT and WiMAX. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Compared to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher data rates (up to 14.0 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink with HSPA+). Thus, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defined the third generation (3G) of mobile telephony standards – IMT-2000 – to facilitate growth, increase bandwidth, and support more diverse applications. For example, GSM (the current most popular cellular phone standard) could deliver not only voice, but also circuit-switched data at download rates up to 14.4 kbps. But to support mobile multimedia applications, 3G had to deliver packet-switched data with better spectral efficiency, at far greater bandwidths.[

Very few people had 3G phones on VZ back in 2003. It was more of a datacard thing, and was called EVDO, I remember how cool it was to get 500 Kbps wirelessly, before the datacard only got 90 Kbps. Now my VZ datacard usually gets 1.2 Mbps - and it feels slow.

"3G" stands for "going, going, gone...". In my area, it's really poor and unreliable...

I use a Treo Pro on T-mobile. T-mobile uses a different set of radio frequencies, so most 3G GSM phones are not compatible. Whenever we're in Mexico, I roam on TELCEL which is 3G. I'm getting about 400-500 kbps here, which is slow compared to AT&T, but fast compared to EDGE.

Apple were smart enough not to gamble the iphone launch on the, at the time, unclear conclusion of the Qualcomm/Broadcom patent infringement flap.

Would have been a spectacular launch if 1 million iPhones were embargoed which was a very likely scenario if the 1st gen shipped with 3g.

Actually, the cell service here is better than the landlines. Think private sector vs. public sector. Carlos Slim is a rich man because Telmex (landlines) is so bad.
