My friends and I went out in Cincinnati a few weeks back and they had a checkpoint set up essentially blocking one of the main entrances to the highway to get out of town. I saw it coming and turned around and found an alternative route. I was the DD and had only had 2 beers at dinner, finishing them by 10pm (driving home at 3am) so I was stone sober and would have 100% been under the limit, but in no way did I want to go through the hassle of sobriety tests at 3am when the other 7 people in my friend's suburban that I was driving were all hammered.

The road they were blocking was the route from a strip of bars to the highway.

Just one thing to add. Christmas day, 2009, was the 1 year anniversary of the death of my neighbors daughter and son-in-law. They were killed by a repeat drunk driver who had her first DWI at 17.

Don't drink and drive. You do not want to live with the consequences and the guilt.

i used to drive from disco to disco, liquored up and then some.
Never been stopped, never any accidents, cliche as it may sound , i actually drove pretty decent those days... probably obeyed the traffic laws more then when i was sober...
Never been stopped even once in those days, never worried about it either.

These days i just have to much to lose, so i drink coca-cola's till i'm wired from sugar and caffeine, and then i go home.
At most i'll drink one glass of champagne if there's a celebration perhaps and only if it's prior to a big dinner or something...
I don't even go out anymore, because i just don't want to get caught up in things and end up driving home when i shouldn't be driving...

So, which Pelican was it again that was DWI, crashed his Porsche in a tunnel, then ran off leaving it blocking the road, and then claimed to the police that the car was stolen?

Designated drunks always forget the official term for what they're doing...it's sad, in a designated kinda way.

Actually, there was a Pelican who was racing and crashed into a Ferrari (IIRC), killing the other driver.

Same here, Tom.

I made mistakes over the years but, strangely enough, non of my driving offenses involved drinking/driving. I farked up stone sober!!!!

Nowdays, I enjoy a beer now and again but not if I am driving. Silly? Sure, but I have to be careful as I have a commercial driver's license and they will come down hard if you get a DWI.

When folks ask why I don't party anymore I tell them" I played in a band in the 80's, I did enough back then for a lifetime."

Pretty sure doing a U-turn to avoid a sobriety checkpoint is another crime in itself. I did it once, but not because I was trying to avoid it. I just thought it was a big traffic jam and wanted to take an alternate route home. Where I turned around was too far away for the cops to notice.

I was pretty far away from the checkpoint, too far for the cops to notice. And and I didn't just whip a u-turn, I pulled into a parking lot, waited for a minute or two, and then drove away. Had a cop pulled me over at that point, he could have never proved that I was turning simply to avoid the checkpoint. I actually had never driven in that part of town before, so being unsure of where I was going would have been a perfectly legitimate excuse.
