I don't really keep this one with me all the time, but do keep a stilleto with me all the time. Not the greatest knife, but it good for cleaning the nails...

I asked a neighbor who was a cop about switchblades. He said he had more to worry about than a switchblade when the bad guys were walking around with AK47's, etc. He did say a noob might get worked up about it though.

If you think the non-gun-owner's opinions can not be changed, then what do you expect to be the actual, practical result of "calling attention" to anything?

(Let's see: if "gun nuts" - as they will be perceived by the average public - start walking around openly wearing guns and triggering lots of fearful 911 calls and police responses, do you think California will respond by (a) allowing all of those "gun nuts" to carry concealed weapons, or (b) requiring firearms to be in locked cases at all times, not just while in cars? What's more likely?)

If you think the non-gun-owner's opinions can be changed, then focus on the most effective way to change those opinions, one person at a time.

As I've said before, I am a practical man. I am not interested in doing things to make a political statement if it isn't going to lead to any actual and useful result.

Individuals are subject to laws, they do not make them. Your idea of changing minds one at a time is not practical, you are simply mistaken about that. We are just going to disagree about this.

If the fourth estate were to start doing their jobs, this stuff would already be on the front page. If elected officials are very publicly called on the constitutionality of what they are doing, they are more likely to respond positively, rather than making the laws more unconstitutional.

Laws don't always make sense... but we can't carry a 4" knife but you can walk around with a loaded clip in your pocket?

Somehow I feel if a cop caught you doing that you would quickly wind up face down on the ground cuffed.

Perfectly legal, and protected by the 2nd Amendment. Actually, carrying fully loaded is also protected by the Constitution, but California has infringed on that by passing their own law to restrict it. Once the case in Chicago is decided (likely in favor of the 2nd Amendment applying to all individuals, in any state), the Open Carry issue will increase dramatically in order to put pressure on the legislature to allow Concealed Carry permits for law abiding citizens, which is the way it should be.

I'm struck by what seems to be a common belief among many people who discuss the issue of rights. It seems that we, as a society, have evolved to a mentality that we are given our rights by the government, or the Constitution, and that Police, or the Authorities have control over those rights. We've lost the American concept of the fact that our rights are bestowed on us by "our Creator" (which can be God, if you so believe, or Nature, if you do not), and as such, we are free to exercise those rights all the way up to the moment that we actually do something to harm another's rights. The Constitution is supposed to protect those rights, and our government is supposed to be limited by the Constitution from infringing on those rights. There is no ambiguity there.

Why have we allowed so much infringement by our government into our lives that we believe they are in charge?

I agree Zoa. We have made a fatal error in allowing the gov't to act as if these are rights that have anything to do with them.

These rights are inherent birth rights.

And the sad reality that no one seems to realize is that we, as individuals, are less safe because of it. When the **** hits the fan, and you need to protect yourself, the only good a cop can do is to draw a clean chalk line around your dead body once they finally arrive. As the saying goes, "When seconds count, the Police are just minutes away."
