I need another vice

No not a bad habit, a new bench vice. My current vice is one I got from my grandfather's garage after he died. It only has one lockdown so I can't get it to clamp down tight enough.

I looked in the big box stores and some local hardware stores and it looks like everyone sells the same selection of vices. They all have different brand names and paint but they are all made in China and are rough castings that look cheap.

I prefer something made in the USA. I know quality cost more. Right now I am leaning towards this one.

Workbench Vise | Tradesman Combination Bench Vise

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks for that link. I like the looks of those and there is a dealer across the street from one of my regular lunch stops.

You should probably only have to buy one Wilton in your lifetime. And your first borns' lifetime.

Which ever you choose, get one with the double base locks. A single one will slip .

That's the truth. I have two (they are for different applications) and will probably have them until "I" break. I also just bought one for a family member. They are pricey but you get what you pay for.

I don't recall what brand we have in the shop but it is English made and will outlast me thats for sure... and our stuff sees way more abuse than most of you guys would subject one to in your garage....

When I was still doing electric motor work our machinists and mechanics would only use Wilton. There wasn't another brand in the whole shop.

Nothing is bullet proof but Wiltons are as close as you can get in my opinion.... which is generally held to be worthless to anyone but myself

Yea, we have a Wilton here at work that is broken. I don't how anyone can break a vice but it is possible. If it had double lockdowns I would take it home and fix it. We sure don't use it here.

In Wilton's defense, I was working on the rear hub and drive shaft for my 1996 Polaris 4 wheeler. I also destroyed a couple of pry bars along with the vice....

You wouldn't think mud and dirt and snow and 13 years of having not taken something aprat would have created such a tight fit!

Big plus one...my vise is my dad's 1930's vintage Wilton. (edit) Just went to the Wilton website...Dad's must be 1940's vintage, since they began in 1941. I was born in '43...cannot remember a time when this vise wasn't around.

One thing for sure. I am real happy that companies like Witton are still around and making things in the USA. Whatever I get will be made in the USA not China.
