Pete Rose was one of my baseball idols when I was a kid playing little league. He screwed up. And shouldn't be in the hall. Nor should any of the 'roid kids. "The Game" is supposed to be about more than that. But maybe it is right that the "national pastime" is rampant with people who are looking for the easy way to get ahead...

That's my sense. He went to great lengths to hide his use from his family and friends. That said, he should have actually the word "ashamed" in his apology.

Not surprised at all by this announcement.

It looks like the steroids hurt his career as much as it helped him hit record HRs. He could have been in the Hall of Fame easily if he stayed clean.

Yep. And I think that is the other part of the reason why he is sorry now.

Mr_Wizard 01-11-2010 06:00 PM

Really??? That's like scientists having a press conference to announce that bears do indeed **** in the woods. What a douche.

I understand your take on the subject of Pete, and in some respects I agree, but in light of how many others out there are still cheating to get ahead I think if they're not gonna be thrown out then Pete deserves the Hall. It stopped being a game eons ago.
In short, throw out all the bums.

Since hes now the hitting coach for the Cards, Im guessing they asked him to clear the air now, before the season, so its not a distraction during the season.

jyl 01-11-2010 08:48 PM

I'm in the group thinking he should be stripped of his records. Sad but necessary. Otherwise there is no punishment, no disincentive, no fairness for the kids or men who don't cheat. Same with doping bicycle riders, cheating F1 drivers, drugged horses.

His admission is still laced with lies. "I did it to heal faster" yeah right.

All the kiss a$$ sportscasters in St Louis are talking like all is forgiven and he should get a pass and all the records should stand.

A bunch of people feel this way about Pete Rose... and, if it's good enough for Petey, it's good enough for Markie and every other cheat on the block!

Pete is banned from baseball for life.

I could make a pretty persuasive argument that this is false, not that it matters.

I quit watching baseball when they cancelled the World Series due to greed. I have not watched any MLB at all since then, I even change the channel when highlights come on ESPN. I have not seen anything to change my mind. When all the homerun fever was happening, it struck me how obvious it was what the deal was, but nobody cared enough to do or say much.

Baseball was my favorite sport growing up, I faked being sick to get out of school and watch Roberto Clemente in the Series.

No more lies than A-Roid, Manny, or any of the others that have been forgiven.

He also said he would have broken the home run record even if he didn't do steroids for ten years. He said hitting home runs was God's gift to him.

What an egotistical jerk.

JavaBrewer 01-12-2010 07:56 AM

Hopefully this news will further propel the anti doping movement in sports (pro and amateur).

1990C4S 01-12-2010 07:57 AM

Did baseball have rules in place banning 'performance enhancers' when he set the record? My recollection is they did not.

On what grounds should he be jailed? Did he lie about his steroid use? Again, my recollection is that he refused to talk about it.

Were the steroids he took illegal at the time?

Yes.

m21sniper 01-12-2010 08:02 AM

Yes, steroids are illegal, they're a controlled substance.

1990C4S 01-12-2010 08:41 AM

I do not know the applicable laws in your country; Assuming he had a prescription did he commit a crime?

McLovin 01-12-2010 08:56 AM

Assuming that space aliens injected him without him knowing during his sleep, did he commit a crime?

widgeon13 01-12-2010 09:00 AM

WTF, he lied about it to protect his arse and now still hopes for the Hall of Fame. What a dbag, he and all the rest should get what Rose got, kicked out of the game.

It's a ******* game and they cheated!

He didn't have a prescription.

And if he did, the doctor who issued it would probably be in deep doo-doo.
