We ran into Richard Simmons at the Newark airport one time. A whole bunch of flights were grounded due to weather (surprise) and a crowd of us were all stuck in the terminal. He put one arm around my wife and the other around my mom for a photo op.

However goofy/weird/creepy you think that guy is on TV, he's worse in person.

One of my dearest female friends in the world is Courteney Cox's first cousin. But if you ask me, my friend outshines her famous cousin by a mile! :-)

I met Werner Klemperer (Colonel Klink from Hogan's Heroes), Marion Ross (Mrs Cunningham from Happy Days) and Lyle Waggoner (Carol Burnett show) in LaJolla, CA during the early 80's and they were all extremely nice, kind people...

I had thanksgiving dinner at Strom Thurmonds house in 99. Now THAT is one funny s.o.b.!!
And I had dinner with Dale Earnhardt back in 00 when he came to the GM dealer I was service mgr , he was very cool and down to earth.
Oh, and when I was a service manager at a Freightliner dealer I got to hang out with they cool guys from Korn after their motor coach broke down which was awesome!!
And GW came to the rib joint I was at in Chattanooga, I got to shake his hand but the secret cervix guys wouldn't let anyone near their table .

So how close does this lowly experiences get me?

Just remembered another brush with fame -- about 20 years ago, I ate salad at Lou Piniella's house. His daughter attended a church youth group that I was a counselor for, and we had a progressive dinner with salad at Mr. Piniella's place. Real nice guy - down to earth. Love his little study which was filled with trophies, special bats and balls..etc.

at the tender age of eight i became the official martini mixer for my parents. when i was ten in 1960 we moved to new rochelle. as we were getting the new house set up i told my folks that we needed to go to the liquor store to get more gin.
new house, new town, new liquor store.
we walked into wykagyl liquors on the north side of town,
i could not believe my eyes. standing behind the counter was buffalo bob smith.
apparently "the howdy doody show"was not his day job.

Over the course of my near 30-years in a journalism related field I have had the opportunity to "meet" what seems to me countless "celebrities" from almost every realm imaginable.
What seems to be almost constant over all these past years is how disappointing most have been. Some are the worst people you could imagine. Some are wonderful.
I have boiled it all down to this way of looking at it: They're just like us "regular" people, they just have different jobs. Some make more money than most of us will ever see; some will lose more than we'll make, and by and large you can't count on them.
There are some exceptions, but most of them are dying off at a regular clip.
Not too many "young" ones that mean that much to me anymore.

LOL, i met Lyle Waggoner too. Before that I had no idea how SHORT he was. Really short. On the Carrol Burnett show they always tried to make him look like the big tall leading man type, but not even.
