Apartment fire!

Heard an alarm that wouldn't stop and some sirens that were to close for comfort...

Someone really went overboard with the wood in the fireplace!

I wonder if that's someone that's been burning those duralogs from the grocery store like mad? Those things seem to be rolled up newspaper soaked in wax. I can't imagine that's very good for your chimney, especially if you never get it cleaned.

Wonder what happened.

Interesting.

Apartment complex fireplaces tend to be gas more so than wood burning.

Least around these parts.

We once had a pizza and beer party at a friend's house. Afterwards we threw all the pizza boxes into the fireplace on top of the logs.
After several minutes we heard sirens.
They got louder as they seemed to get closer.
Finally a crew of firemen stormed up onto his front porch with hoses, axes and ladders in hand.
Imagine Our surprise when they told us we'd have to get out because the chimney was on fire!!!
They closed off the flue and the fire killed itself. We got a scolding about burning pizza bozes in a fireplace that (must not have) hadn't been cleaned.
Live and learn!

Thats a first for me. Most chimmney fires just put out a shytload of smoke. That seems more like a gas fueled fire looking at that flame.

PARF, PARF! I'm gonna tell a poopy head moderator!

I know a guy who was really dumb on two counts:
the first dumb thing he did: he had a very large fireplace. He decided a good way to get rid of his dried out Christmas tree was to shove it all up the fireplace and light it. it didn't all fit in the fireplace even though he pushed really hard. The bottom foot or so was still sticking out but he figured he could push that part in when the top part was burned away.

You know what was next, it went up like a fire bomb shooting fire and sparks and flame out of the fireplace. By that time he realized it wasn't a good idea and he tried to pull the burning tree out of the fireplace to drag it outside. Brilliant!
That caught the mantle on fire and part of the wall as well as the carpet. They got the fire out and saved the house but that end of the house was pretty much toast.

the second dumb thing he did: he told me about it. I manage to work that incredibly dumb move into the conversation almost every time I see him. He's a nice guy but he really is not very sharp. Hopefully the teasing will make him think a little bit and keep him out of the running for the Darwin awards.

How many people are there running around that are dumb enough not to realize what would happen when a dried out 7 foot tall Christmas tree is lighted on fire, especially when it is nearly in the vertical? Scary.

BTW, he's a member of the operating engineer's union and makes around $40 an hour (and over $100k a year or so he says) operating heavy machinery like bulldozers and graders. But hey, he's entitled.

Holy crap, there are a lot of them. I've met them, some of them are so bad that when you meet them and they are in their 30s or 40s, you wonder how they got that far without winning a Darwin award. Luck favors youth and fools.

Chimney fires account for a large part of our fire calls in the winter. You would be amazed at the crap idiots burn in their fireplaces. They burn garbage, pieces of old wood furniture. pressure treated lumber.
If it will burn, they will stick it in there.
