The good Soldiers, david Finkel...
Account of Iraq by an embedded journalist... Brutal, and NOT political... I can't say I "enjoyed" it per se, given the subject matter, but it's a good read ! |

found a collection on ebay. every issue of sport aviation magazine since 1965. cost me $200. have been reading a year at a time. long how to articles on doping fabric. interviews with the last granville brother. a profile with rutan when he was just a guy building stuff in a garage. plans for the backstrom flying planck.
re reading mencken's prejudices. all other political commentators are pale ghosts next to him. read a lot of fantasy garbage in highschool. 14 books later robert jordan's series is finally winding down. just got the latest one of them.

Adding this to my list. I assume that I will read the first few pages, get bored and give it to my wife, who will then read it and tell me it was sooooo good.

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen. Required reading for US Military Officers going to the sandbox or Afghanistan.
The author probably deserves the Peace Prize.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
If you love dogs, racing and F1, this is the book for you. Synopsis Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

I've been on a fantasy binge for a while now. Last year I read A Song of Ice & Fire series by George R R Martin. It starts with A Game of Thrones, of which HBO is currently producing a pilot. The other novels are A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, & A Feast for Crows. His next novel is to be named A Dance with Dragons, but who knows when it will be finished now that he's all wrapped up in the pilot. I enjoyed this series so much that I'll probable read them again later this year.

+1 on that... Not only was it a great (short ) read for me, my wife loved it and even learned a thing or 3 about my hobby (racing porsches) in the process, so consider this a public service book if you like going to track days !!! She then passed it along to her sister -> brother in law -> other sister, that book is making rounds and promoting good driving techniques ;-) Very good one !
