...With my four y/o daughter tinker toys.

Wow, I had a set of the wooden ones; I remember my father and I used to build very large, precariously-balanced structures. He was trained as an architect but spent his life as a machinist, which was probably a good thing for public safety.

Are the plastic ones BPA-free?

My son (4 years old) is a complete LEGO freak like his old man. We'll just sit on the floor for hours building various winged and/or wheeled contraptions. My wife is never really sure if I bring home new LEGO kits for him or for me.

I think the first plastic ones came out in the 80s. For a while all you could get was plastic. My son always preferred my old ones to his new plastic ones. I agree, the plastic just doesn't feel right. They started making a wood version a few years ago, so now you can get either.
