Local kid makes USF1 backup!
Here is the article from our local paper:
The Union "Having already signed on as a back-up driver for the USF1 team, the only American team designing and building their own cars for F1, the Nevada City 18-year-old is ready to take the next step in an already impressive career." A great kid with a lot of potential. Very humble and down-to-earth.

It looks like they want to grow another Lewis Hamilton...
That's good for the team long-term. Let's hope they last that long.

Would you rather have USF1 chosen someone from the US who was even s***tier and done worse?
If USF1 wants to get off the ground, they have to be close to the pace by the end of this year. Which means not having crap drivers. Which means hiring someone who has done F1 / GP2. Which rules almost every driver in the US sans Scott Speed. It's not our national F1 team. This is not A1GP. It just happens to be a team that is based in NC and happens to build a car there.

I don't care if they sign American drivers. It's F1, not Nascar, if someone wants to compete in F1 he needs to cut his teeth in F3, F3000, GP2, etc, and put in the miles on the F1 tracks. If a young American driver who is a F1 hopeful hasn't found his way over to battle in Europe for at least a couple of years, that's a real strike against him in my view.
I was just curious if the starting drivers for USF1 appear to be any good.

it is called the United States formula one team. Not ferrari, not mercedes, not ford or chrysler. It's the United States team.
If they are going to capitalize on the US, they should have a US team with US key players (like US F1 Team Executive Vice President Peter Windsor. Yes, I know he's british). If they want to call it something else and name it after a manufacturer or sponsor instead of a country (like every other stinking team does) then they should hire whoever they want. |

Yea, United States F1, driven by "senior Lopez", sounds kind of off, doesn't it. Have money, will drive.

Well, then they could just call it the Loser Formula One Team and go home. You have to be realistic about what is possible at what time.
